قَدْindeed خَطَبْناwe have proposed وَقَدْand indeed أَجازَhas consented الوَليُّthe guardian
بعدَafter عِلْمٍknowing أَنَّthat الخطيبَthe suitor كَفِيُّa worthy match
We have proposed, and the guardian has consented,
We have made our proposal, and the guardian has consented
After learning that the suitor is a worthy match.
Knowing that the suitor is adequate
وبَعَثْناand we have sent الصَّداقَthe dowry نَثْراًin prose ونَظْماًand in verse
فَمِنَso it is a matter of الحَقِّright أَنthat تُزَفَّbe led in bridal procession الهَدِيُّthe bride
And we have sent the dowry in prose and verse;
We have sent the bride wealth in prose and verse
So it is right that the bride be led in procession.
It is right that the gifts be brought forth
ياO أَباfather of جَعْفَرٍJaʿfar أَمَاis it not بَعْدَafter ظِمْءٍa spell without water
جاوَزَhas exceeded الخَمْسَthe five-day watering interval أَنْthat تُراحَbe given rest المَطِيُّthe riding camels
O Abu Jaʿfar, is it not time, after a spell of thirst
Oh Abu Ja'far, after such a long wait
Lasting more than five days, for the riding camels to be rested?
It is past time five that the stallion be saddled
أَمِنَis it a matter of العَدْلِjustice أَنthat تَجِفَّdry up حَشاهاtheir insides
وبِجَمَّاتِهاand with their abundant waters لَدَيْكَat your side الرُّكِيُّthe wells
Is it just that their insides should dry up,
Is it just that you leave her longing
While the wells lie beside you, brimming with water?
While at your side is the well-bred steed
