I congratulate you both on what in you gladdens the faith:

guidance and generosity—may the faith be safe, and you both be safe.

A month has departed, well pleased; you both have reached

its end nobly, keeping night vigils and fasting.

And a feast of breaking the fast, adorned with prayer to Him

whom we implored not to leave the earth desolate without you both,

has unveiled a face where your radiance shone forth,

and sincerity revealed in its greeting of peace upon you both.

How noble a feast it is, heralding wishes fulfilled,

a festival returning with gladness in your presence.

Never have I seen a day more joyous to behold,

    more radiant, more deeply entering hearts, or more noble;

or greater in its moons, risen as crescents,

    outsoaring stars in a sky of battle dust;

nor a king whose rank God has exalted

less given than you both to swagger and self-importance.

On it, the sun exchanges smiles with pearls and jewels,

and the garden envies its finely patterned embroidery.

Those who court command of the frontier have learned the truth

from eyes that leave no need for spoken accounts.

She is free for you both of every husband and master,

and calls you both to victory, singly and as a pair.

Take turns, you two: the targets belong to whoever shoots.

Seize it, you two: the precious belongs to whoever protects it.

The fruit of tall palms belongs to whoever gathers it,

and the heaven of noble deeds to whoever rises high.

None has captivated high dignities and lofty ranks

    like one who spends the night passionately in love with them, love-enslaved;

who raises banners in peace and battle

    to make them a ladder for truth and justice;

who insists on being first to show generosity,

    and never does a kindness without completing it;

who sees no gain in attaining high ranks

    for one who regards giving coveted gifts as a loss;

who has resolved not to lead his horses to water

    on battle's morning until he has plunged them into blood;

who will not approve his right hand's judgment upon foes

    unless generosity has the ruling voice in it;

who brought Islam glad tidings of peace as he came,

and warned the party of oppression with his sword as he advanced.

Noble deeds choose noble men; let not

this frontier's noble lady pass the night without them, unwed.

You two, bind for her the covenant of a deferred dowry,

and convey the dowry to her as a bridal gift paid in advance.

For you have donned the cloak of fidelity, and she has adorned

her breast with fidelity's well-strung necklace.

She has shone, towering above the Tagus,

with a crescent's crown, itself crowned with stars.

But how to win her away from her unbelief and her king,

and what of the yearning wanderer, far from her and you both?

A piece of my heart lies hostage within her bounds,

and the pupil of my eye is encamped within her shelter.

Time's vicissitudes and distance have scattered our company,

and a heart now parcelled out as separation's plunder.

We find no solace except in grief and self-consolation,

nor meet except in sleep and imagination.

Nights like destitution, lengthened by sorrow—

I wrestled with their length a year, and another full year.

Was it an arrow, shot from the bows of my ribs

by separation, which followed it with arrows into my heart?

Your memory set the doves lamenting; had they kept faith,

they would tell you of my sorrow whenever they sang.

And if rain's dripping respects my claim as a fellow mourner,

it will tell you of my tears for you whenever it pours.

How often I sought refuge from a night of cares in a night

in which I left eyelids exhausted and asleep.

I journeyed through it by the two Shi‘ra stars, pressing far ahead,

and spent it with my heart encamped far from it.

How often, on a pitch-dark night, I came upon its dawn,

more lavish with darkness upon my eyes, and darker still.

Darkness like heaven's cloak stayed with me

    and veiled my temples in gray hair, wrapping them like a turban;

and a dawn clothed the horizons in light and splendor,

but my face in a dark shred of night's gloom.

How many a green deep among the deeps of death

I faced by night, riding a dark, jet-black steed.

Dawn clothed its upper part in a fringed mantle,

and darkness its underside in a soot-black cloak.

When the east wind rippled part of its wing,

it shouldered death's hillocks, submerged and afloat.

How steeply it plunged, a serpent, into death's cleft,

and how high it climbed, a white-legged ibex, on doom's crag!

Calamities—I put on patience until I made them

a ladder to climb to the Amirids' favors.

Thus I became a star in a heaven of honor,

welcomed, ransomed with lives, and revered

by the two kings of our two ages, neighbors of our homes

in royal al-Zahira, which gave them both birth.

By the might of a banner that reaches the stars when raised,

and an ocean of giving that encompasses the earth when it swells,

and horses that shake the earth, traveling by night and setting out at dawn,

    leading earth's kings as captives and booty;

yes, by her white palaces and all they held

of proud lords like lions and fair women like sculpted figures,

and all within her that the nights made flourish and changed,

and God's decree built up within her and tore down,

and the faded remnants of palaces among palaces laid waste,

where the sun's horn darkens when it rises—

lands that shelter you both have indeed been consoled for her loss,

and eyelids that have seen you both have found recompense for her.

May the Lord of the Throne shelter you both in His security's shade,

and never loosen His bond of victory upon you both,

in recompense for the favors you bestowed and the needs you met,

and for the refuge from exile and protection you gave.
