    Take comfort—you who are the solace of all.

    And who but you can mend the rifts?

    And who but you can face a grievous loss,

    assuage it, or confront a dreadful ordeal?

    But for you, none could have endured

    an anguish whose slightest pang no one can bear.

    فَعفَّى السُّلُوَّ عَفاءَ الرُّبوعِ

    Wailing would have risen like the winds,

    wiping out solace as dwellings are effaced;

    وَهُبَّتْ ذُرى كلِّ سُورٍ مَنيعِ

    the edges of every keen, polished sword would have been blunted,

    and the crests of every impregnable wall torn down;

    and the horses would have come from every quarter,

    dragging the reins of abject submission,

    فَغُوِّرَ عنَّا بُعَيْدَ الطُلوعِ

    for a star that shone for those who hoped,

    then was made to set beyond our sight soon after rising;

    and a cloud that poured forth for those who yearned,

    then dispersed when the time for downpour came.

    So, O breast, give forth the ribs' deep sighs,

    and, O eye, give forth abundant tears,

    that I may join the heavens' weeping for him,

    with noon's molten heat and spring's downpour,

    like the sweep of his fluttering banners across the woven sky,

    and the sound of his helmets among coats of mail,

    and of his troops in the open borderlands,

    terrifying enemies from every height,

    مَقَرَّ النفوسِ ودَرَّ النَّجيعِ

    with brown lances that burst open, in every breast,

    the soul's abode and set the blood flowing;

    بموتٍ ذُعافٍ وسُمٍّ نَقيعِ

    and bright blades that flood the impious

    with swift death and potent poison;

    and sleek steeds that shake out their manes

    over each spot where a misguided man lies slain.

    So gain, O Muzaffar, from him whose loss has grieved you,

    the noblest treasure and purest intercessor.

    You will clasp his hand at the gate of Paradise,

    and through him rise to the exalted abode.

    And in God's keeping is a noble root,

    which brings solace for the loss of some branches,

    through a long life that keeps pace with time,

    and the serenity of a life that suffices for all.
