إنَّindeed رَوْضاًa garden لَمْnot تَسْقِهِyou water it مُنْذُfor عامِa year
إنَّ رَوْضاً لَمْ تَسْقِهِ مُنْذُ عامِ
لمخوفٌsurely feared عليهِfor it حَرُّheat الأوامِthirst
لمخوفٌ عليهِ حَرُّ الأوامِ
Indeed, a garden you have left unwatered for a year
Indeed, a garden you have not watered for a year
has cause to fear the scorching heat of thirst.
is surely threatened by the burning heat of thirst.
جارُكَyour protector اللهُGod كيفَhow يظمأُis thirsty رَوْضٌa garden
جارُكَ اللهُ كيفَ يظمأُ رَوْضٌ
أنتَyou جارٌa protector لهُfor it وبَحْرُكَand your sea طامِoverflowing
أنتَ جارٌ لهُ وبَحْرُكَ طامِ
God protect you—how could a garden thirst
God is your protector—how can a garden thirst
when you are its neighbor and your sea is overflowing,
when you are its protector and your sea overflows?
فائِحٌfragrant منfrom شَذَاكَyour fragrance يوماًa day فَيوماًthen another day
فائِحٌ من شَذَاكَ يوماً فَيوماً
أنbecause سَقاهُwatered it نَدَاكَyour dew (bounty) عاماًa year بِعامِby a year
أن سَقاهُ نَدَاكَ عاماً بِعامِ
redolent of your fragrance day after day,
Fragrant with your scent, day after day,
when your bounty would water it year after year?
because your dew watered it year after year.
وفِّهِgrant it in full منfrom نَداكَyour dew (bounty) أوْفىthe fullest نصيبٍshare
وفِّهِ من نَداكَ أوْفى نصيبٍ
فَجَزَاءُfor the reward الكِرامِthe generous رَهْنُdepends on التَّمامِcompletion
فَجَزَاءُ الكِرامِ رَهْنُ التَّمامِ
So grant it from your bounty its fullest share;
Grant it the fullest share of your dew,
the recompense of the generous is pledged to completion.
for the reward of the generous hinges on completion.
وأحَقُّand most deserving الرياضِthe gardens بالسَّقْيِof watering رَوْضٌa garden
وأحَقُّ الرياضِ بالسَّقْيِ رَوْضٌ
رَاهِنٌenduring شُكرُهُits gratitude مَعَwith الأيامِthe days
رَاهِنٌ شُكرُهُ مَعَ الأيامِ
Of all gardens, most deserving of watering is one
And the garden most deserving of watering
that pledges its gratitude for as long as days endure.
is one whose gratitude endures through the days.
والأيادِيand favors أهِلَّةٌcrescent moons فإذاso when مَاemphatic particle
والأيادِي أهِلَّةٌ فإذا مَا
تُمِّمَتْare completed أشبَهَتْthey resemble بُدورfull moons التمامِfullness
تُمِّمَتْ أشبَهَتْ بُدور التمامِ
Favors are crescent moons; and when
And favors are crescent moons; when
made complete, they resemble full moons.
completed, they resemble moons at their full.
ورياضُand the gardens الأشرافthe noble أكْرَمُmore dignified منthan أنْto
ورياضُ الأشراف أكْرَمُ من أنْ
تَتَباهىboast إلّاexcept بِسَقْيِof watering الكرامِthe generous
تَتَباهى إلّا بِسَقْيِ الكرامِ
The gardens of noble men are too exalted
And the gardens of the noble are too dignified
to boast of anything but the watering of the generous.
to boast of any watering but that of the generous.
وعيدٌand a feast day وفصدٌand a bloodletting
وعيدٌ وفصدٌ
ألَّفاthe two have combined منof سَلامةٍwell-being وسَلامِand peace
ألَّفا من سَلامةٍ وسَلامِ
My feast day and my bloodletting
And a feast day and a bloodletting
have joined well-being with peace.
have formed a union of well-being and peace.
وكلاand both الطَّالِعَيْنِthe two ascendants سَعْدٌgood fortune ويُمْنٌand blessing
وكلا الطَّالِعَيْنِ سَعْدٌ ويُمْنٌ
صادقُtrue الفَألِthe omen جائِزُvalid الأحْكامِthe predictions
صادقُ الفَألِ جائِزُ الأحْكامِ
Both portents are happiness and good fortune,
And both ascendants are good fortune and blessing,
true in their augury, their decrees prevailing.
true in omen, sound in prediction.
راحْةٌa palm فُجِّرَتْwas made to gush بِتَفْجِيرٍwith the outpouring of رَاحٍwine
راحْةٌ فُجِّرَتْ بِتَفْجِيرٍ رَاحٍ
ودَمٌand blood صائِبٌpouring لِصوْبِfor a shower of مُدَامِaged wine
ودَمٌ صائِبٌ لِصوْبِ مُدَامِ
A palm gushed as my wine was poured,
A palm made to gush as wine is poured forth,
and my blood streamed down like a shower of wine.
and blood pouring in answer to a shower of aged wine.
وأرىand I see العيدَthe feast day يقتضيdemands منكَfrom you وعداًa promise
وأرى العيدَ يقتضي منكَ وعداً
كاقْتِضاءِlike the demand of الثَرىthe earth لِصَوْبِfor the downpour of الغَمامِthe clouds
كاقْتِضاءِ الثَرى لِصَوْبِ الغَمامِ
I see my feast day exacting a promise from you,
And I see the feast day demanding a promise from you,
as the earth exacts the rain cloud’s downpour:
as the earth demands the downpour of clouds.
ودَوَاءٌand a remedy مُضَمَّنٌguaranteed لشِفاءٍfor healing
ودَوَاءٌ مُضَمَّنٌ لشِفاءٍ
وسُرورٌand joy مُيَسَّرٌmade easy بِدوَامِwith permanence
وسُرورٌ مُيَسَّرٌ بِدوَامِ
and a remedy assured for my healing,
And a remedy guaranteed to bring healing,
and joy made easy in perpetuity.
and joy made easy to sustain.
