Time has smiled on us—so take it and give it here.

Have you not seen the rose upon its bushes?

It has brought bitter oranges from its branches,

And the beloved's blush from his cheeks.

And our lord has clad it in the fine tunics of his sword,

On a day when he clothes it in his enemies' blood.

After the rain had breathed some of its spirit

Into it, and musk's fragrance comes from its wafts.

If a describer has excelled in describing it,

He has indeed fallen short of its wondrous qualities,

Like praise of the most exalted Sayf al-Dawla, which

Has proved baffling, baffling again, in its utmost reaches.

A king who makes generosity shine in his glances,

And good fortune and faith lie in his firm resolves.

By his life, he has left no need unmet

For anyone who hoped in him, save the wish for his long life.
