Intense longing, and union with two beloveds.

Would that I knew what troubles the two reproachers!

And would that I knew, when they blamed me—and that they knew—

Is it in the dark core of my heart and of my eye?

And shall I give their reproach access to my two ears,

Within them, when my excuse is plain in the two downy cheek-lines?

And love's lord has enslaved me; so in him

I seek refuge from one who sets up two gods in love.

And my only sin, in the reproachers' judgment, is

That I am seen as one of two in his favor.

And how often I earnestly pressed the days for her,

As the holder of a precious debt presses for that debt.

And how often, grieving in longing, I offered her

The streams of two eyelids that do not complain of weariness,

With an eye's tears, which my inmost feeling rejected,

Until it made them tears without an “eye” (ʿayn)—blood.
