May the feast that gladdens us through you be joyous for you,

With peace and Islam, security and protection.

May your names and your sky never be deprived of

The stars of good fortune and the auspicious birds.

Through him our days grew auspicious, and there sparkled

Our nights with the light of hopes and noble deeds.

    فسَقْياً لساقِينا ورعْياً لراعينا

    He invited us and gave us drink from his right hand's brimming buckets;

May our cupbearer receive drink, and our shepherd receive care,

And sovereignty, the bestowal of rule, triumph and felicity,

And glory and exaltation, victory and firmly established power.

A prayer for him through whom the call to right guidance grew strong,

To which Islam says: Amen, amen.

A young man who ruled the world and made us rulers in it,

And fought on our behalf, defending sovereignty and the faith.

He hung black serpents about the lions' necks,

And adorned the mail-clad warriors' hands with serpents.

He forsook white palaces and fair women like statues

For white swords that dispel blindness and bring clarity.

Whenever he clothed them in his enemies' blood,

They stole his love from graceful beauties and bashful, wide-eyed maidens.

He left the gardens' trees untended and contented himself

With thickets of spears, making gardens of them,

To bring roses ripe for picking into bloom from throats,

And smell his enemies' souls as fragrant herbs,

And hear, from spears striking their throats,

Doves among their branches, and turtledoves.

It is easy for him to march when the darkness

Clothes his black horses in white caparisons.

He traveled through the nights of the two Kanuns, keeping nothing for himself

But the open sky as shelter, and the stars as braziers.

    بعيدٌ وَمَا أَدْنى لَهُ صوتَ داعِينا

    Near—and how near!—to the battle-crier;

Far away—yet how close our caller's voice is to him!

And if you wish, his face's radiance will not deny you

Little human figures from our eyeballs and the corners of our eyes.

His dwelling is in our souls, in the midst of our breasts,

And his passage is in our breaths, between our collarbones.

What a fine guardian of the sun is her chamberlain, who

Escorts us in her light and takes her place among us.

He appears before us in her light and embraces us all,

And rises for us in her likeness, and so consoles us.

He fulfilled her expectation in our case, when

The clouds of his bounty made true what our souls led us to hope for.

And indeed his two hands have borne fruit for us in blessings

That fall into our mouths before reaching our hands.

Fasting and the breaking of the fast recalled his example,

As did the gathering at the prayer ground and the worshippers' supplication,

And his sitting crowned upon his throne

On the day of salutation, amid the throng of greeters.

So may you long enjoy this greeting, house of Yahya:

You are greeted with ancestral kingship, and you give us life.

    وتُدْعَوْنَ للنُّعمى فنعمَ المُجِيبونا

    You are looked to in great calamity—excellent are you who relieve us;

You are called upon for blessings—excellent are you who answer us.

    وتَجْرَحُ أَيدِي النائِباتِ فتَأْسُونا

    The far reaches of the lands drive us into exile, and you shelter us;

Misfortunes' hands wound us, and you tend our wounds.

    وتسقُونَ من كَأْسِ الحياةِ فتُرْوونا

    You treat us for the calamities of time, and so heal us;

You give us drink from the cup of life, and quench our thirst.

Relentless in cutting into your enemies' bones,

Yet gentle and tender toward Islam.

Even had you not governed us as rulers, you would have been,

By your character, our lords and patrons.

And why were we not, in praising you, as you wished?

You would have been, in pardoning us, just as we wished.

Love for you for God's sake is the purest of our deeds,

And obedience to you for God's sake is the loftiest of our endeavors.
