Thanks to the One who gave you what He gave you:

a Lord who humbled kings before your dominion.

So He satisfied longings through your right hand, just as

He quenched your swords with your enemies' blood.

Qualities within you, by God's justice, were apportioned

among all peoples as livelihoods and destruction.

And God made wretched the fortune of whoever opposed you,

by His doing, and blessed the fortune of whoever allied with you.

Woe to one who chose your wrath, after

the world had shone for him with the star of your favor!

His efforts pressed on to dig a chasm,

so he fell into it from the heaven of your eminence.

A fire scorched him; all night he had struck its fire-stick

in a garden showered with your generous dew.

He passed evening and morning between two robes of treachery,

which stripped him of the favors you had clothed him in.

And did the deluded man not see the fate of one who strove

to repay with ingratitude what your right hand had bestowed upon him?

And did he not see that you had sought help from the Lord of exaltation,

so He helped, and you sought His protection, so He protected you?

And did he not see His judgments and His decree

bringing death upon whoever splits your staff?

And did he not see your crown's radiance among humankind,

and radiant noble deeds among your adornments?

And did he not see the key to the gate of good fortune in

your right hand, and ease in your left hand?

And when did he see an ailment whose cure you did not know,

or a calamity of time that had baffled you before him?

It was no clearer in the evidence he knew

that sovereignty desires none but you,

until his feet plunged into the darkness of death,

when he followed guidance there other than yours.

And God showed you in him, through His acts of vengeance,

His wont in the death of whoever opposed you.

Say to the fallen man: no recovery from the fall

you met by rebelling against your lord!

Ruin upon your striving, as you draw, defiant,

to oppose him, the sword with which he adorned you!

And he gave you a cup of death; how often, how often,

before it had he given you the cup of life!

May the days never blunt a keen sword

with whose two edges God shattered your mouth!

Wronged souls came to life through your death,

whose doom had lain in your life.

So rise with disgrace in faith and this world, for what

your two hands have wrought among the Muslims.

This is treachery's reward; may true guidance never lack

a lord who repaid you for your striving in hypocrisy.

O lord who championed true guidance,

and protected the frontier strongholds and humbled polytheism,

may the Merciful banish only a soul

that strayed while holding the lamp of your guidance!

Perdition to whoever opposed you—nay, humiliation to whoever

rivaled you—nay, disgrace to whoever kept pace with you!

So attain your wishes, for the utmost hopes

of the Muslims lie in your attaining your wishes,

until you see your blessed son raising

the banner of sovereignty, racing to reach your mark,

and he shows you, in a lion-cub of noble deeds and guidance,

and righteousness, the finest of what you showed your father.
