By my life, the tears that streamed have done their utmost,

or found relief from sorrow's torments and brought relief.

And what use are the eye's tears to a liver

aflame, and a wasted man enduring the night in anguish?

O son of those to whose hands and command

Time surrendered its reins, confessing submission.

By their might, God's faith rose victorious,

exacting redress from calamities and foes.

How grievous to faith, the world, and their people

is a calamity that soared and scaled a summit of your glory!

A branch of glory in which the Muslims sought refuge—

the winds of victory blew upon it, and it snapped.

God, what a moon by which petitioners traveled through the night—

until, once it stood full in its horizon, it was eclipsed!

He soared upward to the Garden of Paradise,

for he was ever entranced by lofty glory, passionately devoted.

Those noble virtues befriended him, and he was bound to them

in love; I bear witness: he perished from passion for them.

And a shaft of victory, at which calamities took fright,

has now been struck by the shaft of fate and death.

O you who saw Generosity attend his bier, love-stricken,

clad in anguish, wrapped in sorrow,

calling to him until, weary of addressing him,

it cried, making deaf rocks hear: 'Oh, sorrow!'

And they left it beside him, captive to a grave,

bewildered, kissing and sipping at the mantle of dust,

vying with the rainclouds' tears whenever they poured,

and joining the grove's doves in lament whenever they called.

He had been a lion of battle defending that forest,

guarding the lair, and an heir to those lofty heights.

So God chose him in this world as your forerunner,

a treasure, and in the Garden of Refuge one gone before you,

after the sword of victory had swung in his hand,

and he had charged, enraged and grieved, in defense of guidance.

    يَوَدُّ لَوْ كَرَّ صرفُ الدهرِ أَوْ زَحَفا

    And his resolve girded itself to defend that king;

he longed for Time's vicissitudes to charge or advance.

And the heroes' eyes rose expectantly, watching

when he would don death's armor, forcing his way.

And the undersides of the horses' hooves had woven

sheets of dust over their riders,

as though they, clad in ample mail in morning light,

were stars that had donned dark veils from their night.

And the bright helmets had veiled the radiance of their brows,

as though those brows were sea-pearls dwelling within shells.

So remain safe; may the ranks of unbelief stay scattered

by your sword, and the ranks of faith united.

And welcome Eid with joy; may there be no end

to the nights' bringing you glory anew.

And may triumph and favor gladden you, while our souls

face anguish and sorrow in your stead.
