O purest of the eyelids' tears,
O essence of the most precious eyes whose tears
and the ribs' hoarded treasure of sighs,
And whose sighs fill up the ribs to treasure

To souls whom time straitens with sorrow

at a calamity that shot its arrow into Khattab's family,
For a misfortune that struck the house of Khattab
so the world was bereaved of the noblest of its nobles.
And caused the world to mourn its noble captives

Though death's blow has taken its shade from me,
If I missed the shade of its doves
it has surely compensated me with the harvest of its fruits.
It left me the fruit of its yield

If the water of Dijlah deceived my eyes
its Euphrates has surely flooded both my lands since then.
It flooded my land after Euphrates’ waves
