طَيْرُbirds الفؤادِof the heart عَلَىover لَمَاكَyour dusky lips تحومُhover
فَهُوَfor it is المُنىall that is desired وَهِيَand they are الظِّماءُthe thirsty ones الهِيمُthirst-maddened
The heart’s birds hover over your dusky lips;
For those lips are their desire, and the birds are parched and thirst-maddened.
أَرْيٌhoney تَخَلَّلَseeped through نَظْمَthe arrangement of سِلْكَيْtwo strings of لُؤْلُوٍpearls
فِيon جانِبَيْهِits two sides جَنَّةٌa garden ونَعيمُand bliss
Honey has seeped between two strings of pearls;
On either side of it lie a garden and bliss.
نَمَّتbetrayed عَلَيْهاon it طرَّةُa fringe المِسْكِof musk الَّذِيwhich
أَزْرىcast scorn عَلَيْهِupon it رَحِيقُكَyour pure wine المختومُsealed
A fringe of musk betrayed it—musk that
Your sealed wine has put to shame.
وحماهُand guarded it قَوْساthe two bows of حاجِبَيْكَyour two eyebrows بأَسْهُمٍwith arrows
قَلْبِيmy heart بِهِنَّby them مُجَرَّحٌwounded مكلومُgashed
And the two bows of your eyebrows guarded it with arrows
That have left my heart wounded and gashed.
وسَناًand radiance كإِصْباحِlike the dawn of المُغارِthe raid مُرَوِّعٌterrifying
ودُجىًand darkness كإِظلامِlike the darkness of البياتِthe night attack بَهِيمُpitch-black
And radiance, terrifying as a raid at dawn,
And darkness, pitch-black as the gloom of a night attack;
وعقارِبٌand scorpions صدريmy breast بِهِنَّby them مُلَسَّعٌrepeatedly stung
وأَساوِدٌand black serpents قلبيmy heart بِهِنَّby them سَليمُsnakebitten
And scorpions—my breast is stung all over by them;
And black serpents—my heart is bitten by them.
فكأَنَّنِيso, as though I لَمْdid not يَحْمِنِيprotect me المَلِكُthe king الَّذِيwho
سَجَدَprostrated themselves الفِرَنْجُthe Franks لتاجِهِto his crown والرُّومِand the Romans
So it is as though I had not been protected by the king
Before whose crown the Franks and Romans prostrated themselves,
أَوْor لَمْdid not تُجِرْنِيgrant me refuge راحَةٌa palm يَمَنِيَّةٌYemeni
حَيَّcame alive السَّماحُgenerosity بِهَاthrough it وماتَand died اللَّومُblame
Or sheltered by a Yemeni hand
Through which generosity came alive and blame died.
