هَرَبْناwe fled إِليكمْto you فآوَيْتُمُونَاso you sheltered us
وخفْناand we feared الحُتُوفَdeadly fates فأَمَّنْتُمُوناso you made us safe
We fled to you, and you sheltered us.
And we feared death, and you made us safe.
وشَرَّدَناand drove us out السَّيْفُthe sword منfrom أَرْضِناour land
سِراعاًhurrying إِلَيْكمْto you فَآسَيْتُمُوناso you comforted us
And the sword drove us from our land,
hurrying to you, and you comforted us.
وهَوَّنَand diminished أَقْدارَناour worth الإِغْتِرابُexile
عَلَىin the eyes of كُلِّevery خَلْقٍperson فأَكْرَمْتُمُوناyet you honored us
And exile diminished our worth
in everyone's eyes, yet you honored us.
وأَوْحَشَناand left us desolate الدَّهْرُtime فِيin كُلِّevery بَرٍّland
وَفِيand on كلevery بحرٍsea فأَنَّسْتُمونَاyet you gave us companionship
And time left us desolate in every land,
and on every sea, yet you gave us companionship.
وكمand how often قَدْindeed دَعَوْناwe called upon قريبَnear الدِّيارِthe dwellings
وأَنتُمْand you عَلَىdespite البُعْدِthe distance لَبَّيْتُموناyou answered us
And how often we called to one whose home was near,
yet you, though far away, answered us.
وقابَلْتُمُand you confronted دُونَناin our defense المُعتَدِينَthe aggressors
ونحنُwhile we بأَسوارِكُمْat your walls عائِذُوناseeking refuge
And you confronted the aggressors in our defense,
while we sought refuge at your walls.
ولاقَيْتُمُand you faced البيضَthe white swords والسُّمْرَand the brown spears عَنَّاon our behalf
ونحنُwhile we بِعَقْوَتِكُمْin your courtyard آمِنُوناsafe
And you faced white swords and brown spears for us,
while we were safe in your courtyard.
فأَسْرَيْتُمُso you traveled by night الليلَthe night حِفْظاًfor protection لناfor us
ونحنُwhile we عَلَىupon فُرْشِكُمْyour beds نائِمُوناsleeping
So you traveled through the night to guard us,
while we slept upon your beds.
وبالأَمسِand yesterday وَدَّعتُموناyou bade us farewell كِراماًgenerous
وأُبْتُمْand you returned إِلَيْهاto it فَبَشَّرْتُموناthen you brought us glad tidings
And yesterday you graciously bade us farewell,
and you returned there and brought us glad tidings—
بأَفْرَحِwith the most joyful بُشْرَىtidings تَسُرُّthat gladden النُّفوسَthe souls
وأَعْظَمِand the greatest فَضْلٍfavor يُقِرُّgladdens العُيوناthe eyes
the most joyful news to gladden souls,
and the greatest favor to delight the eyes:
بأَنَّاthat we نَعودُwe will return لأَوطانِناto our homelands
وَقَدْand indeed كَانَit was يُحسَبُthought أَلّاthat ... not يَكوناcome to pass
that we would return to our homelands,
though it had been thought this would never be.
فجازَاكمُso may He reward you اللهُGod عنfor سَتْرِناsheltering us

So may God reward you for sheltering us
with the best reward ever given to those who do good.
وآواكُمُand may He shelter you اللهُGod فِيin ظِلِّهِHis shade
مُقارَضَةًin recompense حِينَwhen آوَيْتُمونَاyou sheltered us
