How long my wandering and wavering seem to me,

and I go at evening and dawn amid the gloom of calamities,

while the earth shines with its lord's two lights,

and dawn breaks clear to the eye of the rightly guided,

through a radiant man from the house of prophethood and guidance,

like the full moon, among the offspring of the Prophet Muhammad:

al-Qasim, the palm of whose hand is divided

    between extending kindness and gripping an Indian-forged sword;

the Hashimite, the Talibid, the Fatimite,

heir to lofty rank through the highest degree of closeness in descent.

Ali bestowed his guidance upon the world,

wrapped within the robes of wisdom and nobility,

until he appeared radiantly to noble virtues and lofty rank,

a full moon passing through the mansions of auspicious stars,

advancing from one place of sunrise into another,

passing from one lord into another,

from every spirit sanctified by chastity

into every body adorned with radiance.

They kept far from vile defilement and were purified

in a place of nurture and birth for begetters of noble offspring.

And many are present though not yet brought into being,

among them, and many are lost as though never lost.

They received no glad tidings of triumph until they were told

of the most dutiful and glorious successor to the forefathers.

To them belong our pure blessings and our prayers

in every pulpit sermon and testimony of faith.

And their place in the heart of every battalion

is like their place in the heart of every monotheist.

They begot you as a truthful tongue speaking for them,

a branch sweet to us through the sweetness of its ancestral stock.

And they chose you for every crushing calamity

and appointed you their successor against every erring aggressor,

and for the voice of a caller repeating his cry for help,

and to free a captive bound by calamities.

A king whose generosity and steed are alike,

whether he charges toward a challenger or a seeker of bounty.

It baffles me: are the necks of his steeds

in battle better guides, or his bounty in the assembly?

The farthest horseman cannot elude him, nor

is his bounty for the near to the exclusion of the far.

The caliphate's sword against its foes, and its guardian

against the unseen, and its adornment in public view.

He serves its inmost heart with a soul that courts danger,

and lulls its eyes to sleep with his own sleepless eye.

Noble men strained, yet never approached a goal

    you attained unhurriedly, without straining.

Through you its fires of strife were extinguished,

which, without you, son of our Prophet, would not have been quenched.

Who but you, when men clashed

in opinion, could reconcile them with a peerless judgment?

And when sharp swords are drawn in a strife

blind, you sheathe them with a sword still sheathed.

And many a spear-kindling strife you have checked

effortlessly, without disturbing a cloaked man's seated knee-wrap.

O you whose right hand, whenever mine clings to it,

makes my secret foes the least of what my hand commands.

And whenever I hobble my mounts in his courtyard,

then I have secured my day's guarantee against tomorrow.

The world promised me your brother as a refuge

from the evil onslaught of wretched time.

Your cheerful welcome suffices me as glad news of my hopes,

and the welcome in your face as fulfillment of the promise.

O son of our intercessor, and noblest example

for those who follow—you are the worthiest follower!

    تَحُزِ الثَّناءَ مُخلَّداً بمُخلَّدِ

    Stretch out your right hand, interceding and granted intercession;

you shall win praise made everlasting through an everlasting tribute.

O son of Ali, the legatee, counsel his namesake

not to let the namesake of your grandfather Ahmad be neglected.

O choicest scion of Hasan and Husayn, how kindly the two have

listened to the affection of the distant man offering love.

O you two moons, where is your radiance

from one enclosed in a black night of sorrow?

O you two rains, is there a way for you toward

the garden of intellect and learning in thirsty dust?

O two Farqad stars of the caliphate's pole, equip

the bearer of greetings from one Farqad to the other.

Then I shall surely make praise for what you two have bestowed

provisions for every traveler to Kufa or Najd,

until the sweetness of the praise I utter is heard by

a grave in Tayba or in the mosque's courtyard.

And when we reach your grandfather's Pool, listen,

while your father gives drink for everlasting refreshment,

to thanks for the dwelling you two made spacious,

and praise for the sustenance you two made plentiful,

for six who grew weak, their number doubled

as a burden upon a man overwhelmed at heart and bewildered.

Exile lashed their saddles on, and they bore

pieces of a heart scattered by sorrows.

And thunderclaps of terror drove them onward, scattering

their homes every which way across the earth.

For the face of their secluded woman, no one seeks

a shelter; nor is their cradle-child given bedding.

They sought refuge in the mirage's gleam as forenoon lengthened,

    after long-stretched shade within palaces.

And they accepted hunger's garb, which wore away

through misery their skin, once used to the richest ease.

And, seeking refuge with the sea of bounty, they made their home amid

the terrors of a foaming sea with towering wave-crests,

each naked, yet clothed in dignified bearing,

and provisioned with patience, yet without provisions.

How excellent a remedy for poverty after wealth,

and abasement after honor, is the family of Muhammad!
