ولِسِرِّand for the secret of وَجْدِيmy passion فيكَfor you أَنْthat يَخْفَىbe hidden
ولِسِرِّ وَجْدِي فيكَ أَنْ يَخْفَى
Never shall the fire of love for you be quenched,
Nor shall the secret of my passion for you be hidden.

فَرْداًalone وكُنْتَand you had been لأُنْسِهِfor his solace إِلْفاa companion
فَرْداً وكُنْتَ لأُنْسِهِ إِلْفا
You left your companion, wasted by sickness, like an alif,
Alone, though you had been his companion and solace.

Two letters of union, sundered by separation,
Had been one letter in the handwriting of love.

صِنْفاً سوايَ وكنتَ لي نِصْفا
So, at the bidding of those who slandered us, you became
Of a kind unlike me, though you had been my other half.
ورأَيْتُand I saw صَبْرِيmy patience كَيْفَhow يَغْدِرُacts treacherously بِيtoward me

And I saw how my patience betrays me,
And found my tears more faithful than you.

And was it through the curl of your two sidelocks
That you denied me the tenderness of your favor?

قَصَّرْتُ عنكَ الوَهْمَ والطَّرْفا
And because the sun clothed you in its splendor,
I held back my imagination and my gaze from you.

And I see Ibn Yahya above the sun's station,
In rank, and exceeding its radiance twofold.

And the earth, through mention of him, has been filled
With fragrance, and through his generosity, with kindness.

And the landmarks of Islam have never ceased
To meet an advancing host with his troops' advance.
