عادَتْmay return عَلَيْكَto you عوائِدُrecurring blessings الأَعوامِof the years
عادَتْ عَلَيْكَ عوائِدُ الأَعوامِ
فِيin العِزِّglory والإِجلالِand reverence والإِعظامِand high honor
فِي العِزِّ والإِجلالِ والإِعظامِ
May the recurring blessings of the years return to you
amid glory, reverence, and high honor.
وعَمَرْتَand may you sustain هَذَاthis الملكَkingdom منتهياًreaching بِهِwith it
وعَمَرْتَ هَذَا الملكَ منتهياً بِهِ
أَمَدَthe utmost extent الدهورِof the ages وغايةَand the limit الأَيَّامِof days
أَمَدَ الدهورِ وغايةَ الأَيَّامِ
And may you sustain this kingdom, bringing it
to the furthest reach of ages and the limit of days,
فيin صحّةٍhealth مصحوبةٍaccompanied بتمامِby wholeness
في صحّةٍ مصحوبةٍ بتمامِ
وسلامَةٍand well-being موصولةٍjoined بدوامِto permanence
وسلامَةٍ موصولةٍ بدوامِ
in health attended by wholeness,
and well-being joined to permanence.
وقهرْتَand may you subdue أَشياعَthe partisans الضلالِof error مُؤَيَّداًupheld
وقهرْتَ أَشياعَ الضلالِ مُؤَيَّداً
بنوافِذِby the unfailing الأَقْدارِdecrees of fate والأَحكامِand judgments
بنوافِذِ الأَقْدارِ والأَحكامِ
And may you subdue the partisans of error, upheld
by the unfailing decrees of fate and judgment.
وبلغتَand may you reach حَيْثُwhere نَوَتْaimed لقصدِكَtoward your purpose هِمَّةٌan ambition
وبلغتَ حَيْثُ نَوَتْ لقصدِكَ هِمَّةٌ
موصولَةُcontinuous in الإِنْجادِjourneying into Najd والإِتهامِand journeying into Tihama
موصولَةُ الإِنْجادِ والإِتهامِ
And may you reach wherever a will devoted to your purpose aims,
unceasing in its journeys through Najd and Tihama.
متذلِّلٌhumbled لَكَbefore you عزُّthe might كلِّof every مُمَنَّعٍunassailable one
متذلِّلٌ لَكَ عزُّ كلِّ مُمَنَّعٍ
متسهِّلٌmade easy لَكَfor you صعبُthe difficulty كلِّof every مَرَامِgoal
متسهِّلٌ لَكَ صعبُ كلِّ مَرَامِ
The might of every unassailable one bows before you;
every difficult goal grows easy for you,
حَتَّىuntil تَبَوَّأَyou gain بالمشارِقِin the eastern lands طاعَةًallegiance
حَتَّى تَبَوَّأَ بالمشارِقِ طاعَةً
مأْمولَةًhoped for منfrom مُعْرِقٍone in Iraq وشآمِيand a Syrian
مأْمولَةً من مُعْرِقٍ وشآمِي
until you gain in the eastern lands an allegiance
long hoped for from Iraqi and Syrian alike,
وتَرُدَّand may you restore نائِيthe distant reaches الملكِof dominion فِيin أَوْطانِهِits homelands
وتَرُدَّ نائِي الملكِ فِي أَوْطانِهِ
منfrom عهدِthe days كلِّof every مُتوَّجٍcrowned ruler فمُقامِand then enthroned one
من عهدِ كلِّ مُتوَّجٍ فمُقامِ
and restore far-flung dominion to its homelands,
as in the days of every crowned and enthroned ruler,
وتُنِيخَand may you bring to rest رَحْلَthe saddle العِزِّof glory غيرَwithout being مُدَافَعٍopposed
وتُنِيخَ رَحْلَ العِزِّ غيرَ مُدَافَعٍ
بمعاهِدِat the dwellings الأَخوالِof maternal uncles والأَعمامِand paternal uncles
بمعاهِدِ الأَخوالِ والأَعمامِ
and bring glory's saddle to rest, unopposed,
at the dwellings of maternal and paternal uncles,
وتحلَّand may there encamp بالحَرَمَيْنِin the Two Sanctuaries منكof yours كتائِبٌbattalions
وتحلَّ بالحَرَمَيْنِ منك كتائِبٌ
مأْمونَةُtrusted in الإِحلالِthe unconsecrated state والإِحرامِand consecration
مأْمونَةُ الإِحلالِ والإِحرامِ
and may battalions of yours encamp in the Two Sanctuaries,
trusted in both unconsecrated and consecrated states.
فَبِكَfor in you استعاذَsought refuge الملكُsovereignty منfrom سَطْوِthe onslaught العِدىof enemies
فَبِكَ استعاذَ الملكُ من سَطْوِ العِدى
وغَدَاand became بسيفِكَthrough your sword باهِرَresplendent الأَعْلامِin its banners
وغَدَا بسيفِكَ باهِرَ الأَعْلامِ
For in you sovereignty sought refuge from the enemies' onslaught,
and through your sword its banners grew resplendent.
وبنورِand by the light وجهِكَof your face أَشْرَقَتْshone سُبُلُthe paths الهُدىof guidance
وبنورِ وجهِكَ أَشْرَقَتْ سُبُلُ الهُدى
وانجابَand lifted عنهاfrom them غَيْهَبُthe gloom الإِظلامِof darkness
وانجابَ عنها غَيْهَبُ الإِظلامِ
And by the light of your face the paths of guidance shone,
and the gloom of darkness lifted from them.
وبجودِكَand through your generosity اتَّصَلَتْwere joined أَمانِيُّthe hopes الورىof humankind
وبجودِكَ اتَّصَلَتْ أَمانِيُّ الورى
بالنُّجْحِto success وانْفَصَمَتْand snapped عُرىthe bonds الإِعدامِof destitution
بالنُّجْحِ وانْفَصَمَتْ عُرى الإِعدامِ
And through your generosity the hopes of humankind were joined
to success, and the bonds of destitution snapped.
فليَشْكُرَنَّso let it surely give thanks الدينُthe faith أَنْfor having أَوْليتَهُyou bestowed on it
فليَشْكُرَنَّ الدينُ أَنْ أَوْليتَهُ
عطفَthe tenderness الشقيقِof a brother وخُلَّةَand the intimacy الأَرحامِof blood kin
عطفَ الشقيقِ وخُلَّةَ الأَرحامِ
So let the faith surely thank you for granting it
a brother's tenderness and the intimacy of blood kin.
فصدعْتَso you shattered عنهaway from it الجوْرَoppression صَدْعَةَwith a stroke ثائِرٍof an avenger
فصدعْتَ عنه الجوْرَ صَدْعَةَ ثائِرٍ
ونظمتَand you arranged فِيهِwithin it العَدْلَjustice أَيَّwhat an excellent نظامِordering
ونظمتَ فِيهِ العَدْلَ أَيَّ نظامِ
For you shattered oppression away from it with an avenger's stroke,
and set justice within it in the finest order.
فاسعَدْso rejoice بأَضعافِin multiples of الجزاءِthe reward وخُذْand take بِهِthrough it
فاسعَدْ بأَضعافِ الجزاءِ وخُذْ بِهِ
أَوْفىthe fullest الحظوظِfortunes وأَوفَرَand the most abundant الأَقسامِallotted shares
أَوْفى الحظوظِ وأَوفَرَ الأَقسامِ
So rejoice in multiplied reward, and take through it
the fullest fortunes and the most abundant shares.
وليهنِكَand may it gladden you الفوزُthe triumph الَّذِيwhich أَحرزْتَهُyou attained it
وليهنِكَ الفوزُ الَّذِي أَحرزْتَهُ
نُسْكاًthrough worship بأَزْكىwith the purest قُرْبَةٍdevotion وصِيامِand fasting
نُسْكاً بأَزْكى قُرْبَةٍ وصِيامِ
And may the triumph you attained bring you joy,
through worship, with the purest devotion and fasting.
وليهنِكَand may it gladden you الفِطْرُthe fast-breaking feast الَّذِيwhich استقبلتَهُyou welcomed it
وليهنِكَ الفِطْرُ الَّذِي استقبلتَهُ
لَهِجاًrepeatedly uttering بخيرِwith the finest تحيةٍgreeting وسلامِand peace
لَهِجاً بخيرِ تحيةٍ وسلامِ
And may the Feast of Fast-Breaking you welcomed bring you joy,
repeating the finest greetings and wishes of peace,
مستبشِراًrejoicing بالحاجِبِin the chamberlain النَّدْبِthe gallant الَّذِيwho
مستبشِراً بالحاجِبِ النَّدْبِ الَّذِي
فِيin بُرْئِهِhis recovery بُرْءٌa cure منَfrom الأَسقامِillnesses
فِي بُرْئِهِ بُرْءٌ منَ الأَسقامِ
rejoicing in the gallant chamberlain,
in whose recovery lies a cure for sickness.
بَدْرُthe full moon المعاليof lofty virtues شَفَّهُwore him thin بعضُsome of الَّذِيwhat
بَدْرُ المعالي شَفَّهُ بعضُ الَّذِي
مَاnot زالَceased يلْحَقُto befall كُلَّevery بَدْرِfull moon ظَلامِof darkness
مَا زالَ يلْحَقُ كُلَّ بَدْرِ ظَلامِ
The full moon of lofty virtues, worn thin by some of what
has ever befallen each full moon of the night.
وشَكَاةُand the ailment ضِرْغامٍof a lion جديرٌfitting كَرُّهاits recurrence
وشَكَاةُ ضِرْغامٍ جديرٌ كَرُّها
منfrom جسمِthe body ضرغامٍof a lion إِلَىto ضرغامِa lion
من جسمِ ضرغامٍ إِلَى ضرغامِ
And a lion's ailment is fit to pass in turn
from the body of one lion to another lion.
حَمِيَتْgrew hot جوانِحُthe inner ribs صَدْرِهِof his breast شوقاًwith longing إِلَىfor
حَمِيَتْ جوانِحُ صَدْرِهِ شوقاً إِلَى
لَمْعِthe gleam الأَسِنَّةِof spearheads فِيin الهجيرِthe midday heat الحامِيthe blazing
لَمْعِ الأَسِنَّةِ فِي الهجيرِ الحامِي
His breast's inner ribs burned with longing for
the gleam of spearheads in the blazing midday heat.
وشَكاand he complained of اعتلالاًillness حينَwhen هامَhe yearned passionately تَذَكُّراًin remembrance
وشَكا اعتلالاً حينَ هامَ تَذَكُّراً
نحوtoward الطِّعانِspear-combat ونحوَand toward ضربstriking الهامِheads
نحو الطِّعانِ ونحوَ ضرب الهامِ
And he complained of illness as remembrance made him yearn
for spear-combat and for blows upon heads.
وأَناand I الزعيمُthe guarantor بأَنَّthat عاجِلَthe promptness بُرْئِهِof his recovery
وأَنا الزعيمُ بأَنَّ عاجِلَ بُرْئِهِ
فِيin قَرْعِthe beating طبلٍof a drum أَوْor صَلِيلِthe ringing لِجامِof a bridle
فِي قَرْعِ طبلٍ أَوْ صَلِيلِ لِجامِ
And I guarantee that his swift recovery lies
in the beating of a drum or the ring of a bridle,
أَوْor لُبسِdonning دِرْعٍa coat of mail أَوْor تَهَادِيthe swaying gait of a steed سابِحٍa gliding steed
أَوْ لُبسِ دِرْعٍ أَوْ تَهَادِي سابِحٍ
أَوْor مَدِّleveling رُمْحٍa spear أَوْor بريقِthe flash حُسامِof a keen sword
أَوْ مَدِّ رُمْحٍ أَوْ بريقِ حُسامِ
or donning mail, or a gliding steed's swaying gait,
or leveling a spear, or a keen sword's flash.
خَوَّاضُone who plunges into أَهوالِthe terrors الحروبِof wars مساورٌassailing
خَوَّاضُ أَهوالِ الحروبِ مساورٌ
غُلْبَthick-necked الليوثِlions مُضَعْضِعُlaying low الآجامِthe thickets
غُلْبَ الليوثِ مُضَعْضِعُ الآجامِ
He plunges into war's terrors, assailing
thick-necked lions and laying low their thickets.
مستقبَلٌgreeted بالنُّجحِby success ممنوعُwell-defended الحِمَىthe domain
مستقبَلٌ بالنُّجحِ ممنوعُ الحِمَى
ماضِيforceful in الطِّعانِspear-combat مُؤَيَّدُupheld in الإِقدامِbold advance
ماضِي الطِّعانِ مُؤَيَّدُ الإِقدامِ
Greeted by success, his domain inviolate,
forceful in spear-combat, upheld in his daring.
أَمَّhe made for العُداةَthe enemies فصالَthen charged صَوْلَwith the assault حِمامِof death
أَمَّ العُداةَ فصالَ صَوْلَ حِمامِ
وسَقَىand he watered العُفاةَthose seeking bounty فصابَthen poured down صَوْبَlike the downpour غمامِof a rain cloud
وسَقَى العُفاةَ فصابَ صَوْبَ غمامِ
He made for the enemies and charged with death's assault,
and watered supplicants, pouring like a rain cloud.
ولَرُبَّand many a مُبْهَمَةِsealed الفروجِin its outlets تَمَزَّقَتْwas torn apart
ولَرُبَّ مُبْهَمَةِ الفروجِ تَمَزَّقَتْ
غَمَّاؤُهاits dense gloom عنaway from وجْهِهِhis face البَسَّامِthe smiling
غَمَّاؤُها عن وجْهِهِ البَسَّامِ
How many a crisis, its outlets sealed,
had its dense gloom torn from his smiling face!
حازَتْwon لَهُfor him الهِمَمُambitions السَّنِيَّةُthe lofty مَنْزِلاًa station
حازَتْ لَهُ الهِمَمُ السَّنِيَّةُ مَنْزِلاً
فِيin الفخْرِglory أَعْجَزَdefied خاطِرَthe thought الأَوهامِof imagination
فِي الفخْرِ أَعْجَزَ خاطِرَ الأَوهامِ
Lofty ambitions won him a station
in glory beyond imagination's reach.
وتهلَّلَتْand beamed منهُfrom him المكارِمُnoble deeds والنَّدَىand generosity
وتهلَّلَتْ منهُ المكارِمُ والنَّدَى
والبأْسُand valor عنrevealing مَلِكٍa king أَغرَّradiant هُمامِvaliant
والبأْسُ عن مَلِكٍ أَغرَّ هُمامِ
From him beamed noble deeds and generosity,
and valor, revealing a radiant, valiant king.
أَعطَىhe gave السِّيادَةَsovereignty حَقَّهاits due حَتَّىuntil اغْتَدَتْit became
أَعطَى السِّيادَةَ حَقَّها حَتَّى اغْتَدَتْ
منهُthrough him الحِجابَةُthe chamberlainship فِيin المَحَلِّthe station السَّامِيthe exalted
منهُ الحِجابَةُ فِي المَحَلِّ السَّامِي
He gave sovereignty its due, until
through him the chamberlainship attained an exalted station.
وحَوَىand he acquired عنfrom المنصُورِal-Mansur غُرَّillustrious شمائِلٍtraits
وحَوَى عن المنصُورِ غُرَّ شمائِلٍ
قادَتْled لَهُto him الدُّنْياthe world بِغَيْرِwithout زِمامِa rein
قادَتْ لَهُ الدُّنْيا بِغَيْرِ زِمامِ
And he gained from al-Mansur illustrious traits
that led the world to him without a rein.
ياO ربَّناour Lord فاحْفَظْso preserve عَلَيْناfor us مِنهُماfrom them both
يا ربَّنا فاحْفَظْ عَلَيْنا مِنهُما
ذُخْرَthe treasure الرجاءِof hope وعُدَّةَand the safeguard الإِسلامِof Islam
ذُخْرَ الرجاءِ وعُدَّةَ الإِسلامِ
Our Lord, preserve for us, in them both,
the treasure of hope and the safeguard of Islam.
ياO مُوسِعَlavisher upon الرَّاجِينَthose who hope إِفضالاًof bounty وياand O
يا مُوسِعَ الرَّاجِينَ إِفضالاً ويا
مَأْوَىrefuge الغريبِof the stranger وكافِلَand guardian الأَيتامِof orphans
مَأْوَى الغريبِ وكافِلَ الأَيتامِ
O you who lavish bounty on the hopeful, and O
refuge of the stranger and guardian of orphans!
أَعْجِزْhow powerless بجهديmy effort is أَنْto يَفيfulfill بالعهدِthe obligation منof
أَعْجِزْ بجهدي أَنْ يَفي بالعهدِ من
مِنَنٍfavors عَلَيَّupon me لراحتَيْكَfrom your two palms جِسامِimmense
مِنَنٍ عَلَيَّ لراحتَيْكَ جِسامِ
How powerless my effort is to repay the debt of
the immense favors your two palms have bestowed upon me!
فَلأَفْخَرَنَّso I shall surely boast عَلَىbefore الزمانِTime وأَهلِهِand its people
فَلأَفْخَرَنَّ عَلَى الزمانِ وأَهلِهِ
بِصِلاتِof gifts جودٍof generosity منfrom نداكَyour bounty كِرامِnoble
بِصِلاتِ جودٍ من نداكَ كِرامِ
So I shall surely boast before Time and its people
of the noble, generous gifts your bounty grants.
أَصْبَحْنَthey have become ليfor me دونَagainst اللِّئامِthe ignoble وِقَايَةًa protection
أَصْبَحْنَ لي دونَ اللِّئامِ وِقَايَةً
وإِلَىand to علاكَyour lofty rank وَسيلَتِيmy means of approach وذِمامِيand my bond of protection
وإِلَى علاكَ وَسيلَتِي وذِمامِي
They have become my shield against the ignoble,
my way to your lofty rank and my bond of protection.
والعدلُand justice فِيin حكمِthe judgment المكارِمِof noble deeds والعُلاand high rank
والعدلُ فِي حكمِ المكارِمِ والعُلا
أَنthat يُشفَعَbe supplemented الإِنعامُfavor بالإِنعامِwith favor
أَن يُشفَعَ الإِنعامُ بالإِنعامِ
And justice, in the judgment of noble deeds and high rank,
is that favor should be followed by favor.
فلأَشكُرَنَّكَso I shall surely thank you أَوْuntil تَجِيءَcomes مَنِيَّتِيmy death
فلأَشكُرَنَّكَ أَوْ تَجِيءَ مَنِيَّتِي
ولأَرْجُوَنَّكَand I shall surely hope in you أَوْuntil يُحَمَّis decreed حِماميmy destined death
ولأَرْجُوَنَّكَ أَوْ يُحَمَّ حِمامي
So I shall surely thank you until my death comes,
and surely hope in you until my destined death is decreed.
ولأَصْرِمَنَّand I shall surely sever علائِقَthe bonds الأَمَلِof hope الَّذِيthat
ولأَصْرِمَنَّ علائِقَ الأَمَلِ الَّذِي
يقتادُنيleads me لِسِواكَto anyone but you أَيَّwith utter صِرامِseverance
يقتادُني لِسِواكَ أَيَّ صِرامِ
And I shall surely sever the bonds of any hope that
leads me to anyone but you—with utter finality.
