أَجِدِMake excellent الكَلامَthe speech إذاwhen نَطَقْتَyou speak فإنَّماfor it is only
أَجِدِ الكَلامَ إذا نَطَقْتَ فإنَّما
عَقْلُintellect الفَتىthe young man فيin لَفْظِهِhis utterance المسموعِheard
عَقْلُ الفَتى في لَفْظِهِ المسموعِ
Perfect your speech when you speak, for it is only
When you speak I find your words to be
in his audible words that a young man's intellect is revealed—
A young man's intellect made audible
كالمرْءlike a man يَخْتَبِرُtests الإناءthe vessel بصَوتِهِby its sound
كالمرْء يَخْتَبِرُ الإناء بصَوتِهِ
فَيَرىand so he distinguishes الصَّحيحَthe sound one بهby it منَfrom المَصْدُوعِthe cracked one
فَيَرى الصَّحيحَ به منَ المَصْدُوعِ
as a man tests a vessel by its sound,
As one taps a vessel to test by its ring
and thereby distinguishes the sound one from the cracked.
