My praise of you and your favors among us

are stars that shine for the worlds.

They sparkle with bounty from your side

upon them, and with praise from ours.

    Jewels you arranged upon threads,

they filled the breasts and delighted the eyes.

Preeminent in precedence among those of old,

and renowned in memory among later generations,

like your lead in every lofty pursuit, until

your dust hindered even the frontrunners.

So how far your night-course lies beyond night travelers!

And how near your refuge is to evening travelers!

Truly, toward you we saddled the Mahri camels,

sharing with us the hardship we had encountered.

Crescent moons of travelers and desert—we traversed

months and years upon them toward you.

We meet swords whenever we are frightened,

and are given deaths to drink whenever we thirst.

At times we see life as a lying conjecture,

and at times see death as a certain truth.

And truly, toward you we rode the winds

as mounts, upon which we saddled the ships.

As though from them, upon the sea's billows, rose

    howdahs swaying with departing travelers.

And wondrous, by God, were mothers that bent

their backs over us and hollowed their bellies.

Death steers them wherever it wills,

while they turn their breasts wherever we wish.

Ordeals that bartered our souls among themselves,

bringing you praise, fresh and unsullied.

    They left our homelands effaced,

and came to you bearing us as supplicants.

    Homes over which tears stream,

where we were slain and where we were taken captive.

There we made sincere our hope in you,

while they hurled conjectures about us:

did we wander in exile, or were we guided?

Did we die of our anguish, or did we live?

So if time marvels that we endured,

more wondrous still is that we survived.

So has word been conveyed of mounts you sheltered,

that they prospered through what had made us suffer,

and how we drove the riding beasts toward you,

as storm winds snap the boughs?

They labored, like your earnestness, firm and resolute,

and became, like your forbearance, tender and gentle.

And that you greeted them with life,

and made them safe from death within your shelter,

and made them tread on goodness until they rested,

and watered them with bounty until our thirst was quenched.

Thus you pleased your Lord in your care for the wayfarer

and for the needy among the Muslims.

You revived bounty and justice upon the earth,

and compassion and kindness, worldly life and faith.

Trusts belonging to God, lost within the garden—

you were their strong, faithful guardian.

So may He richly repay you on our behalf,

and bring you precious praise from us.

    جزاكَ بِهَا جَنَّةَ الفائِزِينا

    He has lodged us in gardens of your compassion;

may He reward you for them with the Garden of the triumphant.

Gardens planted by your right hand, endowed

for evening travelers or callers at night.

Their fruit at every season is guaranteed

by the rains of your sky, time after time.

Their brightest bloom comes from you for beholders,

and their greatest marvel tells of you to listeners.

We make them gush as a river wherever we are,

and eat of them in plenty wherever we wish.

The shelter of a garden in which God ordained

a clear share for those whom fear drove away.

Through your justice it grew in fruit and shade,

and so exceeded the hopes of the hopeful.

You recognized our rightful place within it

through what the fates had shown you of us.

Then your generosity called out there, beckoning toward it:

Peace be upon you; enter in safety.

You have God's protection in the truth of my pledge:

    neither afraid nor driven out.

So, from its spirit, it kept bringing relief

to a despoiled exile, a worn-out, grieving wreck,

and cooling the heat of the fire of swords

and the fire of noontides in which we had burned.

Through it we find solace for homes grown distant,

and through it need no abodes where we once dwelt.

And a livelihood for those for whom you have sheltered

    frail daughters and disheveled sons.

We soothe them with the harvest of its garden

when your gifts forsake them for a time.

We heal with it the anguish of what we have suffered,

and tend with it the wound of what we have lost.

And an honor for us from you, carried abroad by

the mounts of Tihamah's folk and travelers to Najd.

And glad tidings the grateful failed to convey

to close kin whose loss had grieved us.

Nothing startled us but the words of one who knew,

reminding us of the example taken by those seeking solace

from Adam, when the seducers expelled him

from the Garden of Eternity, emboldened

by the malice of an envious man pursuing him,

as we too have suffered from the envious.

Here we are, of all mankind the most entitled

to inherit its like from our father.

And yonder is our garden, the very one

with which the lord of benefactors endowed us.

Our clearest sign is that we

have taken a secure place beside him.

And whoever doubts our share of his approval—

    that is our fairest witness.

Stop, and hear the earth's thunder: men on foot

and riders rushing toward its marker.

The caller for higher bids is keen-eared there,

listening intently to the tongues of the bidders.

He mutters among them that you have grown angry

with us, and that we are among the banished,

to strip away your green veils from us

and erase your radiant traces upon us.

A crier there has made even the deaf hear,

    proclaiming: Hasten to the gloaters!

One shouts, raising the bid by thousands,

from malice that taught him to scorn the hundreds.

And a spiteful foe, baring his teeth, to whom

his wishes have shown what he thought would never happen

to one under your protection, whom you clothed

in the dignity of your honored guests.

And one who undid your covering over a household

clinging to the cord of your fidelity.

What a spectacle, subjecting me beneath your shade

to degradation, disgrace, humiliation and contempt,

with everyone casting the lot-arrows against me

to divide my flesh among the eaters,

and everyone laying your mighty sanctuary open

to the aggressors' onslaught against us.

So they stretched out their ropes, covetous,

and cast down their staffs, confident.
