- أتأذن أن أشكو إليك ولوعيWill you let me complain to you of my ardent longing,
- أتاني الغلام وما قصراThe youth came to me and did not stint,
- أحباب قلبي بنتمBeloved ones of my heart, you have departed,
- أحبابنا الدنيا علي بأسرهاO our beloved, the whole world, for me,
- أحبابنا أي داع بالبعاد دعاOur beloveds, what caller called for separation?
- أحبابنا بلوى تهامة ما لكمO our beloveds at the sandy bend of Tihāmah, why
- أحبتي بجفاكم طالت المدهMy beloved ones, your indifference has lasted too long
- أحيى بموعده قتيل وعودهWith his promised tryst he revived one slain by his promises—
- أخاطبه عند التلفت يا رشاWhen he turns, I address him: “O young gazelle!”
- إذا بعدت ليلى وشط مزارهاWhen Layla is far away and the place to visit her is distant,
- إذا شئت أن تسمع حنينا كأنهIf you wish to hear a yearning cry as though it were
- اذكر ملاعبنا برملة حاجرRemember our places of play on the sands of Hajir.
- أساكن قلبي لا بليت بوجدهO dweller in my heart, may you never suffer its anguish.
- استعمل العصف بعد الدبغ مقلوباUse the chaff after tanning, reversed,
- أسهر جفني وعفاHe kept my eyelid sleepless and wore it away,
- أفنى ابن شمعون جميع الورىIbn Shamʿun has annihilated all mankind.
- أقول وقد لاحت من البعد من قباI say, as from afar, from Quba, there shone
- ألا حرق بحبك في فؤاديAh, love for you burns within my heart;
- ألا خاد أعللها بنجدO swift traveler, I soothe her with talk of Najd,
- ألا قل لركن الدين ذي الفضل والحجاLo, say to Rukn al-Din, endowed with merit and wisdom,
- ألا يا ممرضي بالهجر عدنيAh, you who sicken me with abandonment, visit me;
- الشيب أسكن قلبي غاية الكمدGray hair has lodged the deepest grief in my heart,
- ألقاه بالشكوى إليه فيعرضI meet him, bringing him my complaint, but he turns away.
- إلى أي ضنى أفضىTo what wasting illness has it led—
- إن في السجن مستهاما أسيراIndeed, in prison is a love-stricken captive.
- إن كنت تضمر لي في الحب إشفاقاIf you harbor compassion for me in love,
- أنا مسجد لله بيت عبادةI am a mosque for God, a house of worship,
- أنا والأحبة منجد ومغورMy loved ones and I—one bound for Najd, the other for the lowlands.
- أهل لك في إغاثة مستهامWill you aid one distraught with love,
- أيا شعب نجد رقادي حرامO ravine of Najd, sleep is forbidden me.
- أيها الشيخ دعوة من محبO old man, an appeal from one who loves you,
- بالذل رفعت قصة الهجر إليهIn abasement I submitted to him my petition about estrangement.
- باهي الشموس فأنت منها أملحRadiant suns - but you outshine them all!
- بت ناعم البال بقلب خلىSpend the night at ease, with a carefree heart;
- بجمال وجهك أيها الإنسانBy the beauty of your face, O man,
- بدا فأراني الظبي والغصن والبدراHe appeared and showed me the gazelle, the bough, and the full moon.
- بدر البها في فلك خديك قد أنجمThe full moon of beauty has shone forth in the orbit of your cheeks.
- برحت حتى برح الوجد بيI languished until longing itself racked me;
- بكسرة جفنيه رمز خفىIn the droop of his eyelids is a hidden signal
- بكيت أسى وحق على التصابيI wept in sorrow; youthful frolic rightly deserved,
- بمهجتي الظبي الذي حسنهMy soul be ransom for the gazelle whose beauty
- بوادي الجزع لو علم الرقيبIn the valley of al-Jazʿ—if the watcher only knew—
- بين المزرد والموردBetween the chain-patterned and the rose-red,
- بين لوى الجزع ووادي العقيقBetween Liwa al-Jazʿ and Wadi al-ʿAqiq
- تأمل كيف يبعث لي غراماContemplate how he awakens passion in me
- تبا لدهر أصابتCurse an age that has brought
- تبدت لنا حزوى فهاج جواهاHuzwa appeared to us, and her heartache was stirred
- تجافي إلى أن قلت لا وصل بعدهاHe kept aloof until I said, 'There is no reunion after this.'
- ترى البدر في الليل يهدي النفوساYou see the full moon at night guiding souls,
- ترى ما على اللاحين في حبكم منيWhat harm, do you think, does my love for you do to those who reproach me?
- تعشق من هويت فبت صباThe one I loved fell in love, so I spent the night lovesick,
- جسد ناحل وقلب جريحAn emaciated body and a wounded heart,
- جعلت مدا الوصل مني بعيداYou made union a distant prospect for me,
- حاشا اهتمامك من إسداء مكرمةYour concern is far removed from bestowing a kindness,
- حذار طب ابن شمعون فقد حلفتBeware Ibn Shamʿun’s medicine, for the ailments have sworn
- حكاه من الغصن الرطيب وريقهThe leafy shoot of the tender bough resembled him;
- حلف الربيع بقده الفتانSpring swore by its enchanting figure,
- حيا وسقى الحمى سحاب هاميMay a pouring cloud greet and water the protected grounds!
- خليلي عوجا بالغوير وكثبهMy two friends, turn aside at al-Ghuwayr and its dunes.
- ذكر العذيب فضل من أشواقهHe recalled al-ʿUdhayb and lost himself in longing,
- رثى لي عذولي يوم زمت مطيتيMy reproacher pitied me the day my mount was bridled,
- ردوا لقلبي القلق الفراراRestore flight to my restless heart,
- رمي باللواحظ عن حاجبHe was struck by glances loosed from an eyebrow;
- زبالة لا لشر أنت ممنZubālah, for ill you are not among those
- زعمتم بأن النوق واف حنينهاYou claimed the she-camels’ yearning was undiminished—
- سقى حماك من الوسمي أغزرهMay the most abundant autumn rain water your sanctuary,
- سقيت الحيا يا دير ياقوت منزلاMay rain water you, O Monastery of Yaqut, as a dwelling;
- سلام على أهل تلك الخيامPeace upon the people of those tents.
- سلوا ظبية الواد التي فقدت خشفاAsk the doe of the valley that has lost a fawn:
- سليمي وإن لم أقض منها مآرباSulayma, though I have not obtained from her what I desire,
- شرخ الشباب بحبكم أفنيتهThe prime of youth I spent in loving you.
- صبر غريم الشوق منه مفلسLonging’s debtor is bankrupt of patience;
- صنم عليه من الملاحة رونقAn idol upon whom beauty's radiance rests,
- طب ابن شمعون بلا ريبةIbn Sham‘un’s medicine, without a doubt,
- طيف لك زائري جميل الوصفA vision of you visits me, lovely to describe.
- عذارك والقوام أقام عذريYour cheek-down and stature have vindicated my excuse.
- عذرا فقلبي ما عليه اعتذارPardon me, for my heart owes no apology
- عريب الحمى عهدي نزيلكم يحمىO little Arab tribe of the sanctuary, I knew your guest was protected.
- علمتم بأني مغرم بكم صبYou knew that I was enamored of you, lovesick,
- على دمع عيني من فراقك ناظرA watcher attends my eye's tears at parting from you,
- عودي علي ولو كلمح الناظريReturn to me, if only for the flash of an eye,
- عويذلي في المحبة كف عن عذليMy little reproacher in love, stop reproaching me.
- غير المحبه بقلبي ما زرعتو قطI have never sown anything but love in my heart.
- فتى الشيخ لا ينفك عن ظهر نعلهThe shaykh’s young man never parts from the back of his sandal,
- فديت من حبي لهI would give my life for him—my love for him
- فؤادي والهوى نهبMy heart and passion are plunder,
- في وجهه لذوي التصابي روضةIn his face is a garden for those given to youthful dalliance.
- قاتلي لا برئت من أوزاريMy slayer, may you never be absolved of my sins!
- قال ثوب الشجاع وهو جميلAl-Shujaʿ’s garment spoke, beautiful as it was:
- قد آن أن أشكو إليك وتنصفاThe time has come for me to complain to you, and for you to do me justice.
- قد سل سيف اللحظ فينا وصالHe has drawn the sword of his glance against us and charged.
- قد طاف بكعبة الكرى طيفهمTheir apparition has circled the Kaaba of slumber.
- قد قلت لما مر بي معرضاI said, when he passed me by, turning away,
- قسما بزورتك التي من غير ماI swear by your visit, which, without any
- قلب المعنى دائم خفوقهThe tormented lover's heart beats ceaselessly
- قلب رسيس هواك في سودائهA heart, with the lingering trace of love for you in its dark core,
- قلت إن القضيب يحكيك عطفاI said the bough resembles you in suppleness,
- قلت لأرض العقر ماذا الذيI said to the land of al-ʿAqr, “What is it that
- قلت للسائق المجد بليلI said to the driver, pressing on by night,
- قلت لما بدا وأعرض عنيI said, when he appeared and turned away from me,
- قلت لمحبوبي إذا مر بيI said to my beloved, when there passed by me
- قيد يكابده وسجن ضيقA fetter he struggles against, and a cramped prison.
- قيل يوما لخده لست في الحسOne day his cheek was told: “In beauty you are no
- كذا من حاز في الحسن الكمالاSuch is he who has attained perfection in beauty:
- كيف حرمت على جفني الوسنHow have you forbidden slumber to my eyelid?
- لا طيب من ذكري حبيب ومنزلNo delight comes from my recalling a beloved and a dwelling
- لا غرو إن لعبت به الأشواقNo wonder that longings have toyed with him:
- لا نال قلبي منكم ما أملاMay my heart never attain from you what it hoped for,
- لا هب من الحمى نسيم وسرىMay no breeze blow from the sanctuary and drift by night,
- لا والربيع النضيرNay, by the verdant spring,
- لاموا على حب المليح وعنفواThey blamed me for loving the beautiful one and rebuked me.
- لبرق الحمى عهد علي وموثقI owe the lightning of the sanctuary a pledge and a covenant;
- لبس ابن مقدار الزبالة فروةIbn Miqdar's son wore a beautiful
- لبس الزبالة فروةThe trash donned a fur coat,
- لدواعي الهوى وفرط الخلاعةTo the calls of passion and excessive wantonness,
- لما تبدى لام عارضهWhen the lām-shaped down on his cheek appeared,
- لما وردت فديتها أسطركمWhen your lines arrived—may I be their ransom—
- لمع البرق اليمانيThe Yemeni lightning flashed,
- لمن اللحاظ مريضة الأجفانWhose are the glances with languid eyelids,
- لمني فلومك جهلReproach me, for your reproach is ignorance.
- لو أنكرت لحظات طرفك مصرعيIf the glances of your eye denied my death,
- لولا تجني من قد هجرنيHad not he who deserted me come back to me
- لي حبيب من رآهI have a beloved; whoever sees him
- ليت ابن شمعون درى أنهIf only Ibn Shamʿun knew that he
- ما العيش إن يبدو وابرامة بارقWhat is life, if a lightning flash appears at Rama,
- ما حلت عن عهدهم يوما فلم جالواI never swerved from their covenant for a day—why did they stray?
- ما زلت عليه في الكرى محتالاI kept contriving to reach him in slumber,
- ما ضركم لو بطيب الوصل حليتمWhat harm would it have done you, had you grown dear through sweet union
- ما كنت في عشقي لذاك القوامI was not, in my love for that figure,
- ما للدموع تسيل سيل الواديWhy do the tears flow like a valley's torrent?
- ما لي أرى النوم عن عيني قد نفراWhy do I see that sleep has fled my eyes?
- ما لي إليك سوى النسيم رسولI have no messenger to you but the breeze,
- ما لي وللاحي عليك يعنفWhat have I to do with the reproacher who harshly rebukes me over you?
- مازال يحلف لي بكل آليةHe kept swearing to me by every oath
- متى لا ح لي من أبرق الجزع بارقIf ever lightning flashes for me from Abraq al-Jizʿ,
- محاجر الظبيات الحاجرياتThe eyes of the gazelles of Hajir
- من شيمة الدهر إعراض وإقبالTurning away and drawing near are in Time's nature;
- من لدم القتيلWho will avenge the slain one’s blood,
- من لي بموت يريح قلبيWho will grant me a death that eases my heart
- مولع بالهوى وفرط التصابيEnamored of love and excessive youthful dalliance,
- نعمت بكم والدهر في غفلانهWith you I lived in bliss, while Time was heedless,
- هاتيك دارهم رويدك بالسراThere is their dwelling; take your time on the night journey,
- هب لي جناية ما زلت به القدمForgive me the offense in which my foot slipped.
- هبت فعلمت أنها من نجدIt blew, and I knew it came from Najd—
- هبت نسيمة رامة فتأرقاA little breeze from Ramah blew, and he grew sleepless.
- هم حملوني في الهوى فوق طاقتيThey have burdened me in love beyond my strength.
- هوى لولا لواحظ أم عمروA passion that, but for Umm ʿAmr’s glances,
- هيجت وجدي يا نسيم الصباYou stirred my longing, O eastern breeze.
- واحربا من زمان سوءAlas, my anguish at an evil age!
- وارحمتا لعزيزOh, pity for an honored man,
- وبلدة ما كنت في أهلهاAnd a town where, among its people, I was
- وبمهجتي من زارنيAnd may my life's blood be ransom for the one who visited me,
- وصل الكتاب كتابكم فأخذتهThe letter arrived—your letter—and I took it,
- وغزال من آل شيبان قد أحرمA gazelle from the family of Shayban has deprived
- وقدك إنه حسن التثنيBy your figure, truly graceful in its swaying,
- وقفنا للوداع وقد أثيرتWe stood to bid farewell, and already roused were
- وكنت وليلى كالغداة وخشعهاAnd Layla and I were like the morning and its hush [wording unclear].
- ولم انس يوم البين إذ قال صاحبيAnd I have not forgotten the day of parting, when my companion said,
- ولما ابتلى بالحب رق لشكوتيAnd when he was afflicted with love, he was moved by my complaint.
- ومهفهف عبث السقام بجفنهAnd a slender one—illness toyed with his eyelid,
- ويلاه لا طيف يواصل في الكرىAlas for me! No phantom visits me in slumber
- يا حبيب الحبيب تفديك روحيO beloved of the beloved, may my soul ransom you.
- يا دير يا قوت بالرهابينO monastery of Yaqut, by the monks,
- يا شادنا مد إليه الO young gazelle, toward whom the
- يا عاذلي أين سمعي منك والعذلO my reproacher, what ear have I for you and reproach?
- يا عز ما فعل الزمان بصحبةO ʿIzz, what has time done to a friendship
- يا غادرا نقض العهود وخاناO treacherous one, who broke the pledges and betrayed!
- يا قبلتي جدلي بقبلهO my qibla, grant me a kiss
- يا مرتحلا إلى المصلى غلساO traveler bound for al-Musalla in the predawn darkness,
- يا مرسلا في الدجى من أرض كاظمةO you who send, in the darkness, from the land of Kazimah,
- يا من أهواه وهو عني لاهيO you whom I love, though you are heedless of me,
- يا من سبي العشاق حسنهO you whose beauty captivated lovers,
- يا من ملكني وعن طرف الوفا عرجO you who have possessed me and turned aside from fidelity’s edge,
- يا واحد الحسن ارحم واحد الكمدO peerless in beauty, pity one peerless in anguish.
- يحق من قد جعل ذا الحسن ملبوسكIt is only right, for whoever made this beauty your raiment—
- يسعني عنك تأخيري أيا منMy delay away from you is excusable, O you
- يقولون لما نم آس عذارهThey say, when the myrtle of his cheek-down appeared,
- يلوح لعيني وحش وجرة من بعدThe wild creatures of Wajra appear to my eye from afar,
