زَعَمتُمyou claimed بِأَنَّthat النوقَthe she-camels وافٍample; full حَنينُهاtheir longing cries
زَعَمتُم بِأَنَّ النوقَ وافٍ حَنينُها
فَماthen what بالَهاis the matter with them تسريthey travel by night وَقَلبيwhile my heart المُفَجَّعُis grief-stricken
فَما بالَها تسري وَقَلبي المُفَجَّعُ
You claimed the she-camels’ yearning was undiminished—
You claimed the she-camels’ longing cries were ample;
then why do they journey by night, while my heart lies grief-stricken?
Then why do they travel by night while my heart is grief-stricken?
وَقُلتُمand you said حَمامَdoves الأَيكِthe grove يُبدينَthey express دائِماًalways
وَقُلتُم حَمامَ الأَيكِ يُبدينَ دائِماً
فَماthen why ليis mine ندوبٌlamentation وَالحَمائِمُwhile the doves هُجَّعُare asleep
فَما لي ندوبٌ وَالحَمائِمُ هُجَّعُ
And you said the doves of the grove forever reveal their longing—
And you said the doves of the grove always voice their sorrow;
then why do I bear scars, while the doves are fast asleep?
Then why is mine the lament, while the doves lie asleep?
