    The eyes of the gazelles of Hajir

    are sharper than bright blades—the gleaming Mashrafi swords.

    فَآفَةُ القَلبِ مِن تِلكَ الصَحيحاتِ

    Do not blame my sickness on anything but their health;

    for the heart's affliction comes from those healthy eyes.

    Indeed, by the heat of longings that blaze in

    my heart for the coolness of your teeth, O pearly ones,

    nothing has joined my eyes to sleeplessness except

    those skittish, calf-like oryx.

    O you who reproach the lover, my mind, through love and grief,

    is bewildered by Babylonian eyes.

    If you ever seek news of my blood,

    turn aside to those crimson cheeks.

    And a lightning flash that gleamed toward al-Jidhʿ stirred in me

    at al-Raqmatayn longings of old.

    قِف بُثَّ لي خَبَراً حُيّيتَ مِن آتِ

    O lightning, you have lately come from Salam;

    stay, tell me news—welcome, visitor!

    May the preserve, and the ages that passed in the preserve, be watered

    by banks of clouds, pouring freely and bringing rain—

    playgrounds where Time used to bring us together,

    and a season gone by amid the sweetest pleasures.

    Who can bring me back that time at Hajir? And oh,

    my sorrow for those nights at Hajir!

    فَرَجعَةُ الفَوتِ مِن بَعضِ المرواتِ

    O life of those days, return to me one day, by your own worth;

    for restoring what is lost is among the deeds of nobility.

    And O time of the preserve's evenings, I adjure you:

    do bring back those evenings to us!
