تَجافيhe kept aloof إِلىto أَنthat قُلتُI said لاno وَصلَreunion بَعدَهاafter it
تَجافي إِلى أَن قُلتُ لا وَصلَ بَعدَها
وَواصَلَand he maintained union حَتّىuntil قُلتُI said لَيسَthere is not لَهُfor him هَجرُestrangement
وَواصَلَ حَتّى قُلتُ لَيسَ لَهُ هَجرُ
He kept aloof until I said, 'There is no reunion after this.'
You avoided me till I said no more connection.
And he kept close until I said, 'There is no estrangement with him.'
You persisted till I said your abandonment is not real.
فَياso, oh عَجَباًwonder مِنat هَجرِهِhis estrangement وَوِصالِهِand his union
فَيا عَجَباً مِن هَجرِهِ وَوِصالِهِ
فَلاfor neither حُلوُهُhis sweetness حُلوٌsweet وَلاnor مُرُّهُhis bitterness مُرُّbitter
فَلا حُلوُهُ حُلوٌ وَلا مُرُّهُ مُرُّ
So how strange his estrangement and his union!
What a marvel your abandonment and connection are!
For his sweetness is not sweet, nor is his bitterness bitter.
So neither its sweetness is sweet, nor its bitterness bitter.
