لتعتدي طالباً طوراً ومطلوُبا
Use the chaff after tanning, reversed,
Use the tanned leather upside down
So that you may assail, now seeking and now sought.
To attack seeking glory and desire

فليس يحتاج لا كأساً ولا كُوبا
And grow drunk on wine, and understand what I alluded to;
And get drunk on winds and understand what I bought it for
For it needs neither a goblet nor a cup.
It needs neither a cup nor a goblet

Charge against the people, and be forbearing if they charge;
Bear down on the people and be determined if they bear down
For you have always been vanquisher and vanquished.
You have always been a victor and a vanquished

You have the two steeds, so mount what you wish and leave
What you do not wish to ride, set aside with the darkness.
What you don’t wish in the darkness bent

You reminded us of Archiebras when you rode and when
You had the crown—the palm-leaf crown—bound around your head.
You wore the crown, the crown of palm fronds bent

Oh poet who today does not understand the narrator
He recites bawdy verse, since he has recited no love poetry.
Who narrates vulgarity though did not taste affection
