ألاَهل لِنارٍ من تَضَرُّمها يُطفى
Ask the doe of the valley that has lost a fawn:
Ask the gazelle of the valley, who has lost her fawn,
Is there, then, anyone to quench a fire's blazing?
Is there one not fit for a fire whose coals blaze up at lament?
وَقولاand say, you two لِوَرقاءِto a gray dove الأَراكَةِof the arak tree عِندَهاwithin her
وَقولا لِوَرقاءِ الأَراكَةِ عِندَها

مِنَ الشَوقِ ما عِندي إِذا فَقَدتُ إلفا
And tell the gray dove of the arak tree: within her
And say to the sand grouse of Arak, when you are with her,
Is the longing I feel when I lose a beloved companion.
"I have as much longing as you when I lose a friend."

يُرى كُلَّ يَومٍ في صَبابَتِهِ الحَتفا
But far from it! One like me, enslaved by love,
Alas! One like me, enamored with passion,
Sees death each day in his ardent longing.
Is seen every day babbling deliriously.

My two dear friends, turn aside; let us ask the caravan a favor
My two friends, ask the caravan, out of need,
In Najd, for we have known a fragrance there.
About Nejd, for we have come to know it well.
وَلاand do not تَعذُلانيreproach me, you two أَنfor لَثمتُI kissed أَراكَةًan arak tree

تَميلُit bends فَمنfor from سَلمىSalma تَعَلَّمتit learned العطفاbending
تَميلُ فَمن سَلمى تَعَلَّمت العطفا
And do not reproach me for kissing an arak tree:
Do not blame me for kissing sand grouse,
It bends, for from Salma it learned to bend.
If she leans towards me, I have learned tenderness.
