What is life, if a lightning flash appears at Rama,

and a phantom from Tihama visits by night?

No! Nor are pleasures a ruined encampment,

gone with its inhabitant, while the driver pressed onward.

Life is clear wine, whose radiance seems

a firebrand that blazed, and the dark night grew bright.

Deacons prayed over her in the monasteries,

and chief bishops fell before her in prostration.

What have I to do with the gazelles of al-Aqiq and Rama?

The gazelle of al-Aqiq and Rama's gazelle are divorced.

A virgin, never broached by a drinker's palm,

since she came to be—still a virgin, aged.

Whoever may be a yearning lover in Najd,

besotted—I, for my part, am a lover of wine.

Foolish is the judgment of a youth who spends the night with no

winning stallion on tawny wine's racecourse.

Especially when there have been pitched for the army of patience

    pavilions above the delightful meadows.

And upon time lie the beauties of spring,

Joy's heart is a sand dune enamored of them.

O drinker of tawny wine, take what lies before you—seize the chance:

an adorned land and gushing water.

    رُفِعَت عَلَيهِ مِنَ الغُصونِ صَناجِقُ

    And the armies of fresh blossoms are battalions;

above them, standards of boughs have been raised.

And birds sing out among the boughs, as though they were

a beguiling refrain of lovesick melodies.
