وَكُنتُand I was وَلَيلىand Layla كَالغَداةِlike the morning وَخَشعِهاand its hush (uncertain)
تَحومُshe hovers عَلىaround قَربيmy nearness لَهاto her وَأَحومُand I hover
And Layla and I were like the morning and its hush [wording unclear].
Leila and I were like dawn and its serenity,
She hovers near me, and I hover near her.
Hovering over each other, yearning and longing.
إِذاif غابَis absent مِنّاof us واحِدٌone عَنfrom قَرينِهِhis companion
يَكادُhe almost مِنَfrom الشَوقِlonging الأَليمِpainful يَهيمُhe becomes distraught
If one of us is absent from his companion,
When one of us was absent from the other,
He almost goes mad with agonizing longing.
We would almost go mad from painful desire.
قَضىdecreed الدَهرُTime بِالتَفريقِseparation بَينيbetween me وَبَينَهاand between her
فَلاso may not كانَhave existed دَهرُTime إنَّهُindeed it is لَمَشومُsurely ill-omened
Time decreed separation between me and her.
Fate decreed separation between her and I,
May Time never have existed—it is indeed ill-omened!
What an ill-omened fate it was!
