وَلَمand did not اَنسَforget يَومَthe day of البَينِparting إِذwhen قالَsaid صاحبيmy companion
وَلَم اَنسَ يَومَ البَينِ إِذ قالَ صاحبي
وَقَدand already أُشعِلَتwas kindled نارُthe fire of الغَضاghada wood وَتَضَرَّمَتand blazed
وَقَد أُشعِلَت نارُ الغَضا وَتَضَرَّمَت
And I have not forgotten the day of parting, when my companion said,
I have not forgotten the day we parted, when my companion said
While the fire of ghada wood had been kindled and blazed:
As the fire of sorrow blazed and sighs were heard:
حَبيبُكَyour beloved لاnot تُخطيmiss النُفوسَsouls سِهامُهُhis arrows
حَبيبُكَ لا تُخطي النُفوسَ سِهامُهُ
فَقُلتُso I said لَهُto him مِنfrom مُقلَتَيهِhis two eyes تَعَلَّمَتthey learned
فَقُلتُ لَهُ مِن مُقلَتَيهِ تَعَلَّمَت
"Your beloved's arrows never miss souls."
"Do not let your arrows strike souls, O beloved!"
So I said to him, "They learned from his two eyes."
So I told him, "It is from your eyes that I have learned."
