وَمُهَفهَفand a slender one عَبثَtoyed السَقامُillness بِجَفنِهِwith his eyelid
وَسَرىand crept onward فَخَيَّمَthen encamped فيin مَعاقِدِthe girdle-points of خَصرِهhis waist
And a slender one—illness toyed with his eyelid,
And crept onward, then encamped where his waist is girdled.
مَزَّقتُI tore أَثوابَthe robes of الظَلامِdarkness بِثَغرِهwith his mouth
ثُمَّthen اِنثَنىhe turned away فَرَقَعتُهُنَّso I patched them بِشَعرِهwith his hair
I tore the robes of darkness with his mouth,
Then he turned away, and I patched them with his hair.
وَتَعَلَّمَتand learned أردافُهُhis hips فيin مَشيِهاtheir walking
خَفَقانَthe flutter of قَلبيmy heart عِندَat ساعَةِthe moment of ذِكرِهmentioning him
And his hips learned, as they walked,
The flutter of my heart at the moment he is mentioned.
ماnot زِلتُI ceased أولِعُI am devoted بِالبُكاto weeping مُتَعَرِّضاًseeking attention
حَتّىuntil ذَلَلتُI was humbled لِعَبدِهِbefore his slave وَلِحُرِّهand before his freeman
I kept indulging in tears, seeking his attention,
Until I was humbled before his slave and his freeman.
وَشَرِبتُand I drank كَأسَthe cup of صُدودِهِhis rejection مُتَجَرِّعاًswallowing gulp by gulp
حَتّىuntil بُليتُI was afflicted بِحُلوِهِby his sweetness وَبِمُرِّهand by his bitterness
And I drank the cup of his rejection, gulp by gulp,
Until I was afflicted by his sweetness and his bitterness.
وَمُزَنَّرٍand one wearing a girdle ياoh لَيتَنيif only I were زِنّارُهُhis girdle
كَيماso that أَفوزَI might win بِضَمَّةٍwith an embrace مِنfrom خَصرِهhis waist
And one wearing a girdle—oh, if only I were his girdle,
So that I might win an embrace from his waist.
لَمdid not أَنسَI forget لَمّاwhen أَنthat أَتىhe came فيon عيدِهِhis feast day
عيدِthe feast of التَشَعنُنِPalm Sunday وَالصَليبِand the cross بِنَحرِهat his throat
I have not forgotten when he came on his feast day,
The feast of Palm Sunday, with the cross at his throat,
والقَسand the priest يسقيهِgives him to drink المَدامَwine رَوِيَّةًunhurriedly
وَالمُسلِمونَand the Muslims بِأَسرِهِمall of them فيin أَسرِهhis captivity
And the priest gave him wine to drink, unhurriedly,
While the Muslims, one and all, were in his thrall.
قَدindeed لَطَّفَتهُhas made him delicate يَدُthe hand الهَوىof love فَكَأَنَّهُso it is as though he
كَالماءِlike water يُؤلِمُهُpains him النَسيمُthe breeze بِمَرِّهby its passing
Love's hand has made him delicate, so he seems
Like water: the breeze pains him as it passes.
فَاِحذَرso beware مُذاكَرَةَspeaking of الفِراقِseparation فَإِنَّنيfor I
أَخشىI fear عَلَيهِfor him يَذوبُhe melts ساعَةَat the moment of ذِكرِهits mention
So beware of speaking of separation, for I
Fear for him, lest he melt the moment it is mentioned.
فَيَكونُso he would be مِنamong شَهداءِthe martyrs of أَوَّلِthe first مُرتَضىchosen one
وَتَعودُand you return أَنتَyou وَقَدand already شَقَيتُI suffered بِوَزرِهunder his burden of sin
So he would be among the martyrs of the first chosen one,
And you would return, while I had suffered under his burden of sin.
وَحَياتِهِby his life لَولاwere it not for مَلاحَةِthe beauty of وَجهِهِhis face
ماذَلَّwould not have bowed إِسلاميmy Islam لِشِدَّةِbefore the force of كُفرِهhis unbelief
By his life, were it not for the beauty of his face,
My Islam would not have bowed before the force of his unbelief.
