بِكَسرَةِwith a droop جَفنَيهِhis two eyelids رَمزٌa signal خَفىhidden
إِلىto الصَبِّthe lovesick one بِالكَمدِby grief المُتلَفِdestroyed
In the droop of his eyelids is a hidden signal
With the flutter of his eyelids, a hidden symbol
To the lovesick one destroyed by grief.
Of passion with twisted vine.
أَلاah! قَدindeed بَرانِيَhe wore me away مِنbecause of قدِّهِhis figure
وَذاكَand that التَثَنّىswaying وَلَمyet did not يَعطِفِshow tenderness
Ah, he has worn me away with his figure
He truly cured me of my pride,
And that swaying—yet he has shown no tenderness.
And bent, though not inclined.
عَطَفتُI wrapped عَلىaround جيدِهِhis neck ساعِديmy forearm
لِيَشفيto quench الأوامَthe burning thirst وَلَمyet did not يَشتَفِfind relief
I wrapped my forearm around his neck
I leaned my arm upon his neck
To quench the burning thirst, yet it remained unquenched.
To heal the wish, though no wish gained.
أَبَعدَafter (questioning) الزَمانِtime لَناfor us ضَمَّةan embrace
لَعَلَّperhaps الضُلوعَthe ribs بِهاby it تَنطَفيare quenched
After all this time, is there an embrace for us?
After so long, one embrace for us -
Perhaps the ribs will be quenched by it.
Perhaps with it, hearts eased of pain.
وَأَهيَفٍand a slender one ماnever ماسَhe swayed إلاهَفاbut it fluttered
فُؤاديmy heart إِلىtoward قَدِّهِhis figure الأَهيَفِslender
And a slender one—whenever he swayed, there fluttered
Desire which nothing sated but desire
My heart toward his slender figure.
My heart toward his most pliant neck.
