وَلَمand not تَهمُstream with tears أَجفانيmy eyelids فَماthen not أَناI عاشِقُa lover
If ever lightning flashes for me from Abraq al-Jizʿ,
and my eyelids do not stream with tears, then I am no lover.
وَإِنand if لَمnot أَمُتI die مِنfrom بَعدِafter سُكّانِthe inhabitants of رامَةٍRamah

And if I do not die after Ramah's people have departed,
then I am not truthful in my claim to love.

What excuse has a lover who does not die, when already
the she-camels have been roused for the beloved's departure?
أُفارِقُهُمI part from them عَمداًdeliberately وَلَمand not أَدرِI knew بِالأَسىin grief

I part from them deliberately, yet in my grief cannot tell
whether it is my soul or those laden camels I am leaving.

in dread of your parting, keep watch for reunion.

You have gone far away—no, by God, since you left I am not
alive, nor does the soul feel secure within my body.
وَهَيهاتَand how far-fetched أَنthat يَرجوshould hope for الحَياةlife مُتَيَّمٌone enslaved by love

وَهذاand this غُرابُraven of البَينِseparation بِالبَينِof separation ناعِقُcroaking
And how vain for one enslaved by love to hope for life,
while this raven of parting croaks of separation.

O our beloved ones, you have departed: the dune's branch is no longer
leafy, nor is the water of joy clear.

جُفونيmy eyelids لَطيفٍfor a dream-vision مِنكُمof you وَأُسارِقُand I steal furtively
It is sorrow enough that I beguile with sleep
my eyelids, seeking a dream-vision of you, and furtively snatch sleep.
وَكَيفَand how أَرانيI see myself كُلَّeach مَنperson whom لَمnot أُحِبُّهُI love him

And how do I find myself with each person I do not love,
offering him unalloyed fidelity, and dissembling?

فَماfor none يُرتَجىis looked to لِلعَونِfor help إِلّاexcept الأَصادِقُtrue friends
My two dear friends, will you not aid your brother?
For only true friends are looked to for help.

For he has no comforter but his yearning,
and no rescuer but the streaming tears.

A captive of passion—his tears and his sleep
are, by passion's decree, set free and divorced from him.

O moon, whose every appearance illumines for us the
western and eastern horizons with its radiance.

I would ransom you! You have bound my heart with love;
so why do you not honor your pledges to it?
I seek protection for you مِنfrom نارِthe fire of اِشتِياقيmy longing وَلَوعَتيand my anguish

I seek protection for you from the fire of my longing and anguish,
and may you never taste the anguish that I taste.

You dwell in my heart, and it, fearing for
your beauty because of the fire lodged within it, trembles.

By your worth, I shall never entertain thoughts of forgetting,
even if love's bonds are severed from me.

in all sincerity, even if your ways are not pure.
