مازالَhe kept يَحلِفُswearing ليto me بِكُلِّby every آلِيَّةٍoath
مازالَ يَحلِفُ لي بِكُلِّ آلِيَّةٍ
أَنthat لاnot يَزالَcease to be مَدىthroughout الزَمانِtime مُصاحِبيmy companion
أَن لا يَزالَ مَدى الزَمانِ مُصاحِبي
He kept swearing to me by every oath
He still swears to me with every oath
That he would remain my companion for all time.
That he will accompany me forever
لَمّاwhen جَفاgrew coarse العِذارُthe cheek-down بِخَدِّهِon his cheek
لَمّا جَفا العِذارُ بِخَدِّهِ
فَتَعَجَّبواthen marvel لِسَوادِat the blackness of وَجهِthe face of الكاذِبِthe liar
فَتَعَجَّبوا لِسَوادِ وَجهِ الكاذِبِ
When the down grew coarse upon his cheek,
When the excuses on his cheek dried
Then marvel at the blackness of the liar’s face.
