قُلتُI said لَمّاwhen بَداhe appeared وَأَعرَضَand he turned away عَنّيfrom me
قُلتُ لَمّا بَدا وَأَعرَضَ عَنّي
هَكَذاlike this مَنwhoever هَويكَloves you يَلقىsuffers الهَواناhumiliation
هَكَذا مَن هَويكَ يَلقى الهَوانا
I said, when he appeared and turned away from me,
When he turned away from me, I said:
"So this is how one who loves you suffers humiliation."
"Thus is the one who loves you left in disgrace!"
قالَhe said أَنتَyou العَزيزُthe cherished one بَلrather ذاكَthat كَيلاso that ... not
قالَ أَنتَ العَزيزُ بَل ذاكَ كَيلا
يَعلَمَlearn الكاشِحونَthe spiteful foes مِنّاfrom us هَواناour love
يَعلَمَ الكاشِحونَ مِنّا هَوانا
He said, "You are cherished; rather, I did that lest
He replied: "Nay! You are the noble one; as for him, never!
The spiteful foes learn from us of our love."
Let revilers know that we two are above disgrace!"
