It is a visit that banished sleep and left
That visit has denied me sleep and left
within my ribs an ember that will not go out.
Among my vitals a fire that will not die.

If you befriend or abandon me, do me justice
or forsake me, wrong me, or treat me justly.
Or wrong, I am the slave of your beauty.

Far be it from your beauty, my heart’s desire,

To promise union and not fulfill!

And Love’s sick one, when he heard that you

Once talked of parting, despaired of cure.
