Pardon me, for my heart owes no apology

For spending the night entranced by that cheek-down.

Black as night upon a cheek—

Glory to Him who made it rise from that cheek in daylight!

O heart, since death's arrow was nocked—

His eye's arrows—where is there escape?

His swaying form is drunk on the wine of youth,

Yet in his eyelids linger traces of a hangover.

How can I escape the love of a young gazelle,

When passion has encircled my heart and closed around it?

O moon, for whom my heart now holds

    Subtleties hidden from Kusyar.

Do not leave my gaze desolate, for you are the one

Toward whom my passion journeys, whichever way you go.

O company of men, the gazelle of the sanctuary

Has taught my sleep to flee my eyelids.

    لا طالبَ اللَهُ سُلَيمى بِثار

    None but Sulayma has made my blood lawful to shed;

May God never exact blood-vengeance from Sulayma.

His eye reveals its power to me,

Yet his gaze regards me with meekness.

Had he assailed Haydar with a glance,

His hand would not have held Dhu al-Fiqar.

    مِن لَحظِ عَينَيهِ الحَذارَ الحِذار

    This is the one who takes people's minds captive;

Beware, beware the glance of his eyes!

If the reproacher knew my longing for him,

He would come to me with an apology for his censure.

Alas for my love of a Hijazi woman,

Her forefathers, tall and tawny, are of Nizar.

The crescent on the horizon wished that it

Might become a bracelet on Su'da's forearm.

    يا لِلنَدامى البِدارَ البِدار

    The hour has favored the drinking of wine;

    O drinking companions, hasten, hasten!
