ياO غادِراًtreacherous one نَقضَbroke العُهودَthe pledges وَخاناand betrayed
ماnot هَكَذاthus عَهدُthe covenant of الأَحِبَّةِthe lovers كاناwas
O treacherous one, who broke the pledges and betrayed!
O you who broke pledges and betrayed,
Such was not the covenant of lovers.
This was not how the covenant of lovers used to be.
لَمdid not يَبقَleave هَجرُكَyour desertion وَالتَجَنّيand unjust reproaches وَالقِلاand aversion
فيin القَلبِthe heart يَوماًfor a day لِلوَفاءِfor fidelity مَكاناa place
Your desertion, unjust reproaches, and aversion have left
Your abandonment, aloofness, and turning away
no room in the heart for fidelity, even for a day.
Did not remain in my heart a single day of loyalty.
لَوif أَنَّthat خَطباًa calamity غَيرُother than هَجرِكَyour desertion مَرَّpassed بيby me
وَرَأَيتُand I saw مِنهُfrom it ماwhat يَهولُterrifies لَهاناit would have been easy
Had a calamity other than your desertion befallen me,
If other misfortunes besides your abandonment had befallen me,
and had I seen its terrors, it would have been easy to bear.
And I saw in it that which horrifies and subdues,
أَشكوكَI complain of you مِنbecause of أَسَفيmy grief عَلَيكَover you صَبابَةpassionate longing
كَالنارِlike fire لاno بَلrather تَحرِقُit burns النيراناthe fires
I complain of you, grieving over you with a longing
I would complain of my anguish over you like
like fire—no, rather, it burns fires themselves.
A fire, no, burning fires.
صالَحتُI reconciled ماwhat lies بَينَbetween السُهّادِsleeplessness وَناظِريand my eye
لَمّاwhen رَأَيتُكَI saw you مُعرِضاًturning away غَضباناangry
I made peace between sleeplessness and my eye
I made peace between my pillow and my eyes
when I saw you turning away in anger.
When I saw you turning away, angry.
ماذاwhat علىupon الأَيّامِthe days لَوif أَخَذَتthey secured لَناfor us
يَوماًfor a day مِنَfrom البَينِseparation المُشِتِّthat scatters أَماناsafety
What would it cost the days if they secured for us
What if the days took for us
a day's safety from sundering separation?
One day of terrible separation as security?
لاmay not كانَhave been يَومٌa day بِالقَطيعَةِwith estrangement وَالقلاand aversion
عَنfrom قَوسِthe bow of حاجِبشهِhis eyebrow (apparent typo) المَسوَدِthe blackened رَماناshot at us
May there never have been a day that, with estrangement and aversion,
It would not be a day of separation and anguish
shot at us from the bow of his black eyebrow.
From the bow of his frowning eyebrows an arrow.
لِلَهِto God (expressing wonder) زَورٌa visitor مِنfrom خَيالِكَyour phantom زارَنيvisited me
بَعَثَawakened الهُمومَthe cares وَهَيَّجَand stirred up الأَحزاناthe sorrows
How wondrous the visitor from your phantom who came to me!
By God, your phantom visited me,
It awakened cares and stirred up sorrows.
Stirred up sorrows and excited griefs.
عانَقتُI embraced مِنهُof it ماwhat شَفَيتُI healed بِهِwith it الجَوىburning heartache
فَكَأَنَّنيso it was as though I عانَقتُهُI embraced him يَقظاناwhile awake
I embraced something of it, with which I healed my burning heartache,
I embraced from it what healed my sickness,
so it was as though I had embraced him while awake.
As if I had embraced you awake.
