You knew that I was enamored of you, lovesick,

So you tormented me, and torment is sweet to you.

And you joined sleeplessness to my eye,

So my tear does not cease, nor does my sigh subside.

Go on wronging me however you wish, for you are

My heart's beloveds—no weariness and no reproach.

Your turning away is union, and your displeasure is contentment,

And your injustice is justice, and your distance is nearness.

You have within my heart a dwelling raised

Above reproach; neither Su'da nor 'Utb has dwelt there.

And when you dwelt in my heart, no part remained

In my body that did not wish it were a heart.

When he smiles, my eye pours forth tears,

Just so, at lightning's flash, the clouds pour down.

If ever my eye stays awake for anything but your beauty,

Then may its tears never stop streaming before me.

Through whom can my supporters seek redress for my death, when you,

Alongside passion, are foes aiding in my slaying?

Perhaps a return to the ravine will grant me my wishes,

As the ravine brought us together before parting.

And no mother bird whose chick has left her, leaving her

Bereaved in the grove, ever wailing and lamenting,

Longs more than my heart longs for you; would that I

Had died of grief—or that love had never existed.

Within me is a thirst: time wastes away and ends,

And nothing but your love will ever suffice for it.

And I am taken with a tipsy one who never sways without

The supple spears and branches bowing before him in shame.

My heart is a sanctuary for keeping faith in love for him,

And prey to yearning and the sickness buried within it.

When his eyes and his cup are my drinking companions,

I hold a station beneath which lie East and West.

He reproaches me, though the fault in love is his,

So he returns forgiven, and the blame is mine.

May God curse a heart that does not wander mad with longing,

And a lover who does not yearn for those dwellings.

Ah, O breeze that blew from the land of Hajir,

They implored you: is the sanctuary's herd still that same herd?

And are there lovely trees at al-Athil,

Under whose shade the caravan travels evening and morning?

May God protect a clan at al-Muhassab in Mina,

Unconcerned with honoring bonds, and without blame.

They shunned me, though once they kept close, then turned away,

Seeking distance from me, though they are my companions.

If only you were just, though my fate were unjust,

And if only you were at peace with me, though all mankind were at war.
