قالَsaid ثَوبُthe garment الشُجاعِal-Shujaʿ وَهوَand it was جَميلٌbeautiful
تَعشَقُloves passionately العَينُthe eye نَظرَةًa glimpse مِنهُof it عِشقاwith passion
Al-Shujaʿ’s garment spoke, beautiful as it was:
The robe of the valiant, and it is fair
The eye passionately loves a glimpse of it.
The eye desires a glance from it, love
صِرتُI became فيin فَروَةِthe fur cloak of النُمَيرِيِّal-Numayri سُحقاًa threadbare rag
لَيتَنيif only I لاnot عَدِمتُhad been deprived of مَرضاًsickness وَحَدقاand eyes
I have become a threadbare rag in al-Numayri’s fur cloak.
I became on the fringe of al-Numayri shredded
If only I had not been deprived of sickness and eyes!
If only I was not missing an illness and pupil
لَوif أَرادَwished الزَمانُTime يَعظِمُto exalt قَدريmy worth
لَمnot يَدَعنيleave me عَلىupon الزِبالَةِthe rubbish heap مُلقىcast aside
Had Time wished to exalt my worth,
If time wanted to magnify my worth
it would not have left me cast upon the rubbish heap.
It would not have left me discarded on the rubbish
