رَثىpitied ليfor me عَذوليmy reproacher يَومَon the day زَمَّتwas bridled مَطِيَّتيmy mount
لِفُرقةِfor separation from أَحبابيmy loved ones عَشِيَّةَon the evening وَدَّعواthey bade farewell
My reproacher pitied me the day my mount was bridled,
My friend mourned for me the day my she-camel faltered,
for parting from my loved ones, the evening they bade farewell.
When my loved ones bid farewell in the evening.
بَكَيتُI wept دَماًblood مِنfrom بَعدِafter دَمعيmy tears لِبَينِهِمfor their parting
فَلَمso not يَبقَremain ليfor me دَمعٌtears وَلاnor ليfor me مَدمَعُa weeping eye
I wept blood after my tears for their departure,
After my tears I wept blood for their separation,
so no tears remained to me, nor an eye to weep with.
No tears remained for me, nor a place for tears.
مَتىwhenever طَلَبواthey ask مِنّيfrom me لِدَعوايَfor my claim شاهِداًa witness
فَإِنَّthen indeed شَهوديmy witnesses أَربَعٌfour ثُمَّthen أَربَعُfour
Whenever they ask me for a witness to my claim,
Whenever they ask me to testify to my longing,
my witnesses are four, then four more:
My witnesses are four, then four more:
نُحولٌwasting وَذُلٌّand humiliation وَاِشتِياقٌand longing وَغُربَةٌand exile
وَوَجدٌand love's anguish وَأَشجانٌand sorrows وَصَدٌّand rejection وَأَدمُعُand tears
Wasting, humiliation, longing, and exile,
Emaciation, humility, yearning and exile,
and love's anguish, sorrows, rejection, and tears.
Passion, sighs, estrangement, and tears.
