O ʿIzz, what has time done to a friendship

That once existed between us in Erbil,

And a love whose affection, as I knew it,

Was more firmly rooted than the foundations of Yadhbul?

Indeed, I would shield you from reproach, which was never

A trait of yours, from the earliest days.

And by my life, the ways of the days are plain:

Their misfortunes do not last; they will pass away.

    أَعدِل فِداكَ خِلالُ أَهل الموصِلِ

    So I shall not reproach you over what I have voiced;

Be just—may the traits of Mosul’s people be your ransom.

Be as you wish; you are not the first to transgress,

Among men, speaking much of what he never did.

Treachery prevails in human nature, and only

One possessed of the fullest loyalty keeps faith with it.
