إِنif كُنتَyou are تُضمِرُharbor ليfor me فيin الحُبِّlove إِشفاقاcompassion
فأطلِقِthen let flow الدَمعَthe tears خَلفَbehind الظعنِthe departing caravan إِطلاقاfreely
If you harbor compassion for me in love,
If you harbor any affection for me,
then let your tears flow freely behind the departing caravan.
Then let tears flow freely behind the stab.
لاdo not تَلحَنيreproach me فَصَباباتٍfor passionate longings قُطِعتُI was cut off بِهاthrough them
إِلىto اللَذاذاتِpleasures إِسباباًmeans of access وَإِغلاقاand closure
Do not reproach me: through passionate longings I was cut off
Do not try to seduce me with youthfulness that has led
from the paths to pleasure, and shut out.
Me to pleasures, a means and a block.
بَينيbetween me وَبَينَand between حِمىthe sanctuary of الأَحبابِthe loved ones عَهدُa pledge of هَوىًlove
أَلّاthat not أَزالَI cease إِلَيهِfor it الدَهرُfor all time مُشتاقاyearning
Between me and the loved ones' sanctuary lies a pledge of love:
Between me and the sanctuary of loved ones is a covenant of passion
that I shall never cease to yearn for it, as long as time endures.
That time has perpetually made me yearn for.
يَشتاقُlongs قَلبيmy heart إِلىfor نَجدٍNajd وَيُطرِبُهُand enraptures it
نَسيمُthe breeze of نَجدٍNajd إِذاwhenever ماemphatic particle هَبَّit blows خَفّاقاfluttering
My heart longs for Najd, and it is enraptured
My heart yearns for Najd and is stirred
by Najd's breeze whenever it blows in fluttering gusts.
By the breeze of Najd when it blows gently.
وَأسأَلُand I question البَرقَthe lightning أَحياناًsometimes فَتُخبِرُنيthen you tell me
عَنهُمُabout them بِماwith what يَملَأُfills الأَحشاءَthe entrails إِحراقاwith burning
And sometimes I question the lightning; then you tell me
And I sometimes ask lightning, so it tells me
about them, with tidings that fill my entrails with fire.
About them, with that which fills my heart with burning.
رَبَّةُthe lady of الخالَينِthe two beauty spots ذاكِرَةٌremembering
بَعدafter البِعادِseparation لَناfor us عَهداًa pledge وَميثاقاand a covenant
O lightning, does the lady with the two beauty spots remember
O lightning, does the mistress of the moles still remember
after separation, a pledge and covenant with us?
After the separation, the covenant and pact we had?
واوَحشَتاalas, my desolation! لِدِيارٍfor dwellings دونَthis side of كاظِمَةٍKazimah
كُلُّall الفَضاءِopen space لِعِينٍto an eye بَعدَهُمafter them ضاقاgrew narrow
Ah, my desolation for dwellings this side of Kazimah!
And how lonesome are the abodes without Kazima,
All open space has narrowed to the eye since they departed.
All space, without them, seems narrow to the eye.
قالَتshe said فُتنتَyou were bewitched بِناby us وجداًwith passionate love فَقُلتُso I said لَهاto her
كَمhow many قَدindeed فَتِنتِyou have bewitched رَعاكِmay He preserve you اللَهُGod عُشاقاlovers
She said, "You are bewitched with love for us"; I said to her,
It said, "You were tempted by us wholeheartedly", I said,
"How many lovers you have bewitched—may God preserve you!"
"How your passionate lover has tempted you!"
ويلاهُwoe is me! مِنbecause of عَذبِةsweet الأَلفاظthe words مُذsince هَجَرَتshe deserted
ماnot راقَpleased لِلعَينِto the eye ماwhat مِنof عيشَةٍa life راقاwas pleasant
Woe is me for the sweet-spoken one! Since she deserted me,
Woe to me from the sweet words since she left.
what once was sweet in life no longer delights the eye.
Nothing has appealed to the eye nor any life appealed.
ياO لَسعَةًa sting فيin فُؤاديmy heart لاnot أَرىI see أَبَداًever
لَهاfor it سِوىexcept القُربِnearness مِنto لَمياءَLamya دِرياقاan antidote
O sting within my heart! I can never find
O vastness in my heart I will never see
an antidote for it save nearness to Lamya.
Except nearness to Lamiya has appealed.
إِنif أَومَضَflashes البَرقُthe lightning نَجدِيّاًfrom Najd بَعَثتُI send لَهُto it
جارٍflowing مِنَof الدَمعِtears مِدراراًpouring abundantly وَمِهراقاand poured forth
If lightning flashes from Najd, I send toward it
When the Najdi lightning flickered I sent it
a stream of tears, pouring abundantly and spilling forth.
A torrent of tears flowing and pouring.
لَواَنَّif it were that قَلبيmy heart فيin صَخرٍrock لَقَلقَلَهُwould surely shake it
حادٍa singing camel-driver بِهاwith her يَومَon the day سَفحِthe foot of المُنحَنىthe bend سِباقاracing
Were my heart enclosed in rock, it would be shaken
If my heart was in a rock, it would shake it,
by the swift camel-driver singing her onward that day at the foot of the bend.
Agitated with passion on the day of the curved incline race.
لاmay not مَتَّعَgrant enjoyment to اللَهُGod طَرفيmy eye فيin مَحاسِنِهاher beauties
إِنif كانَit had مِنfrom بَعدِهاafter her طيبُthe sweetness of الكَرىsleep ذاقاtasted
May God deny my eye delight in her beauties,
May God not let my eyes delight in her beauty,
if, since she left, it has tasted the sweetness of sleep.
If after her the morrow's joy has appealed.
