قَدindeed قُلتُI said لَمّاwhen مَرَّhe passed بيby me مُعرِضاًturning away
قَد قُلتُ لَمّا مَرَّ بي مُعرِضاً
فيin قَفَصٍa cage يَحمِلُhe carries زَرزوراa starling
في قَفَصٍ يَحمِلُ زَرزورا
I said, when he passed me by, turning away,
Once when he passed by with his camel
Carrying a starling in a cage:
Carrying a sparrow in a cage
ياO ذاyou الَّذيwho تَيَّمَنيenthralled me حُبُّهُlove for him
يا ذا الَّذي تَيَّمَني حُبُّهُ
إِنif لَمnot تَزُرyou visit حَقّاًin earnest فَزُرthen visit زوراin pretense
إِن لَم تَزُر حَقّاً فَزُر زورا
O you whose love has enthralled me,
I said: O he whose love has left me forlorn
If you will not visit in earnest, then visit in pretense.
If you do not visit in truth then visit in pretense
