My heart's beloved, you were my life,
and you were all I desired.
My every question, you were the light.
لاmay not أَوحَشَmake desolate اللَهُGod الحِمىthe sanctuary
وَلاnor العَقيقal-Aqiq مِنكُمُof you
May God not leave the sanctuary desolate,
May Allah not deprive the sanctuary,
nor al-Aqiq bereft of you.
Nor the valley, of your blessed sight.
كَمhow often قَدindeed بَكَيتُI wept رَبعَكُمyour dwelling

How often have I wept over your dwelling,
How I've wept for your old dwellings!
and how often have I asked about you!
How I've asked for news of your plight!
كَيفَhow اِشتِغاليmy distraction عَنكُمُfrom you

وَكُلُّand all شُغليmy concern أَنتُمُyou
How can I turn my thoughts from you,
My thoughts ever turned towards you,
when you are my whole concern?
You were all my care day and night.
القُربُcloseness مِنكُمto you صِحَّةٌhealth
وَالبُعدُand distance عَنكُمfrom you سِقَمُsickness
Closeness to you is health,
To be near you was but healthfulness,
and distance from you is sickness.
While distance brought only blight.

And whenever I remember you,
And whenever I thought of you,
blood pours from my eye.
My eyes overflowed outright.

My days after you are dark as night,
is dark as the nights.
No light or joy left in my sight.

O Lord, against the cruelty of separation,
O Lord, protect me from the cruelty of fate,
be generous to me, for You are the Judge.
Be my judge, and show me what is right.
سَعَواthey spread slander بِناagainst us فَلاso may not سَعَتmove
بِالكاشِحينَcarrying the spiteful foes قَدَمُa foot
They slandered us—may never stir
They tried to tempt us, but availed not,
a foot that carries those spiteful foes.
No schemer could our bond e'er blight.

The spring of my joy has, since we parted,
I parted from you, is forbidden.
Been forbidden, devoid of delight.
