أَناI مَسجِدٌa mosque لِلَهِfor God بَيتُa house عِبادَةٍworship
عاريbare of المَلابِسَgarments لَيسَthere is no فِيَّwithin me حَصيرُa mat
I am a mosque for God, a house of worship,
I am a mosque for Allah, a house of worship,
Bare of garments, with no mat within me.
Bare of carpets, in me there is no mat.
هَجرَhas deserted المُؤذِنُthe muezzin وَالجَماعَةِand the congregation جانِبيmy side
وَجَفانِيَand has forsaken me التَهليلُproclaiming 'There is no god but God' وَالتَكبيرُand proclaiming 'God is greatest'
The muezzin and congregation have deserted my side,
The muezzin has deserted me, and the congregation,
And the cries of 'There is no god but God' and 'God is greatest' have forsaken me.
The prayers and glorifications have left me parched and barren.
الشَمعُthe candles فيin رَبعِthe precincts of الكَنايِسِthe churches مُشعِلٌalight
وَفَناءُand the courtyard of رَبعيmy dwelling مُظلِمُdark دَيجورُpitch-black
The candles in the churches' precincts are alight,
The candles in the churches are burning bright,
And the courtyard of my dwelling is dark, pitch-black.
While my courtyard is plunged in dark gloom.
بِالأَمسِyesterday لِلقُرآنِfor the Qur'an فِيَّwithin me عَبارَةٌan utterance
وَاليَومَand today لِلشَيطانِfor Satan فِيَّwithin me عُبورُpassage
Yesterday, the Qur'an had a voice within me;
Yesterday, the Quran reverberated within me,
And today, Satan has passage through me.
Today, Satan roams unfettered through my being.
مَنwho مُبلِغٌwill convey عَنّيon my behalf شِكايَةَthe complaint of مُحرِقٍone burning with grief
مِنهاfrom it بِقَلقَلٍwith trembling يَذبُلُYadhbul وَثَبيرُand Thabir
Who will convey for me the complaint of one burning with grief,
Who will convey the burning agony inside me,
Which sets Yadhbul and Thabir trembling?
That smolders and withers and is blown away?
ياO قُدوَةَexemplar of الإِسلامِIslam كَيفَhow تَرَكتَنيyou have left me
بِيَدِin the hands of الصَلاحِal-Salah (literally, righteousness) وَشَأنِهِand his way التَقصيرُneglect
O exemplar of Islam, how have you left me
O exemplar of Islam, how could you abandon me,
In the hands of al-Salah, whose way is neglect?
To the whims of the righteous and their neglect?
صُلassail صَولَةَthe onslaught of الحَقِّjustice الحَقودِthe vengeful عَلَيهِمagainst them
وَاِغضَبand be angry فَأَنتَfor you are بِذَلِكَfor that المَأجورُthe rewarded one
Assail them with the onslaught of vengeful justice,
Attack, attack the unjust enemies with all your might,
And be angry, for you will be rewarded for it.
For in doing so, you will be rewarded.
وَاِخجَلنيand it shames me وَالذُلُّand humiliation حينَwhen يُمُرُّsomeone passes بيby me
فَيُقالُso it is said هَذاthis مَسجِدٌa mosque مَهجورُabandoned
And I am shamed and humiliated when someone passes by me,
Shame me, when dishonor passes by me,
And then it is said: 'This is an abandoned mosque.'
So it can be said "This is an abandoned mosque."
لَوif كُنتُI were فيin أَيديthe hands of النَصارىthe Christians بَيعَةًa church
لَبَكىwould surely weep عَلَيَّover me القَشُّthe priest وَالساعورُand the church overseer
If I were a church in Christian hands,
If I were in the hands of the Christians as a church,
The priest and the church overseer would surely weep over me.
Even the straw and the gypsum would weep for me.
