عَلىover دَمعِthe tears of عَينيmy eye مِنfrom فِراقِكَparting from you ناظِرٌa watcher
يُرَقرِقُهُmakes it well up إِنif لَمdo not تُرِقهُspill it المَحاجِرُthe eye sockets
A watcher attends my eye's tears at parting from you,
My eyes overflow with tears of your absence
making them well up if the eye sockets do not spill them.
Glistening as pearls if you do not shed them
فَدَيتُكَmay I be your ransom رَبعَthe abode of الصَبرِpatience بَعدَكَafter you دارِسُruined
عَلىdespite أَنَّthat فيهِwithin it مَنزِلَthe dwelling of الشَوقِlonging عامِرُinhabited
May I be your ransom! In your absence, patience's abode lies in ruins,
I would give a quarter of my patience for you, after you it crumbles
though within it the dwelling of longing flourishes.
Though this is where longing resides prosperously
يُمَثِّلُكَconjures your image الشَوقُthe longing الشَديدُthe intense لِناظِريbefore my eye
فأطرِقُso I bow my head إِجلالاًin reverence كَأَنَّكas though you حاضِرُare present
Intense longing conjures you before my eyes,
Longing represents you vividly to my sight
so I bow my head in reverence, as though you were present.
So I bow in reverence as if you were present
وأطويand I fold عَلىaround حَرِّthe heat of الغَرامِpassion جَوانِحيmy ribs
وَأُظهِرُand I show أَنّيthat I am عَنكَof you لاهٍheedless وَصابِرُand patient
And I enclose the heat of passion within my ribs,
And fold my passion-scorched wings
and make a show of being heedless of you and patient.
Pretending to be oblivious and patient about you
عَجِبتُI marveled لِخالٍat a mole يَعبُدُworships النارَthe fire دائِماًalways
بِخَدِّكَon your cheek لَمhas not يُحرَقbeen burned بِهاby it وَهوَthough it is كافِرُan unbeliever
I marvel at a mole that always worships fire,
I'm astonished by one whose deity is always fire
upon your cheek, yet has not been burned by it, though it is an unbeliever.
Yet his cheek was unburnt though an infidel
وَأعجَبand more wondrous مِنthan ذاthis أنthat طَرفِكَyour gaze مُنذرa warner
يُصَدِّقُconfirms the truth فيin آياتِهِits signs وَهوَthough it is ساحِرُa sorcerer
And more wondrous than this is that your gaze is a warner,
More amazing is that your flirtatious glance
confirming the truth through its signs, though it is a sorcerer.
Testifies to its signs though a sorcerer
أَلاtake heed ياO لقَوميmy people, to my aid قَدindeed أَراقَhas spilled دَميmy blood الهَوىlove
فَهَلthen is there لِقَتيلِfor the victim of الأَعيُنِthe eyes النَجلُwide ثائِرُan avenger
Ah, my people, to my aid! Love has spilled my blood;
Oh my people, love has shed my blood
then is there an avenger for the one slain by wide eyes?
Will the avenger arise for the slain of eyes?
وَمُذand since خَبَّرونيthey told me أَنَّthat غُصناًa bough قَوامُهُhis stature
تَيَقَّنتُI became certain أَنَّthat القَلبَthe heart مِنّيof me طائِرُa bird
And ever since they told me that his stature is a bough,
Since I was told a branch standing tall
I have been certain that my heart is a bird.
Was no more, I knew for certain my heart had flown
يَروقُpleases لِعَينيto my eye أَنthat يَفيضَshould overflow غَديرُهاits pool
إِذاwhen اِنسَدَلَتfell down كَاللَيلِlike the night تِلكَthose الغَدائِرُthe tresses
It pleases my eye that its pool should overflow,
My eyes delight to see its springs overflowing
when those tresses fall like night.
When the covers of night enshroud those cheeks
وَماand not اِخضَرَّturned green ذاكَthat الخَدُّthe cheek نَبتاًwith plant growth وَإِنَّماbut rather
لِكَثرَةِbecause of the frequency of ماthat شُقَّتwere split عَلَيهِupon it المَرائِرُthe gallbladders
And that cheek has not turned green from plant growth, but rather
That cheek grew no herbage, but was rendered green
because of how often gallbladders have been split upon it.
By the multitude of tears that furrowed it
