An emaciated body and a wounded heart,
A frail body and a wounded heart
and tears streaming down the cheeks;
With tears streaming down my cheeks

and a beloved whose unjust reproach is bitter—yet
And a beloved who is bitter as bile
all the lovely one does is lovely.
Yet everything the Beautiful does is beautiful

O you whose heart is carefree, passion has filled
Oh the confidant of my heart, grief has filled
my heart, and torment has grown fierce.
My heart and scattered it to the winds

Grant me union by which I may live, or estrangement
Be quick to reconcile or break things off entirely
in which lies my death—perhaps then I may rest.
So that in separation I may find peace

How can I sober up from love, when your gaze is a cup
How can I wake love-sick when your eyelashes intoxicate
of Babylon, whose morning draught is sweet?
Like wine of Babylon, sweet in the early dawn
أَنتَyou لِلقَلبِto the heart فيin المَكانَةِstanding قَلبٌa heart

To my heart, you hold the place of a heart,
You are to my heart what a heart is
and to my soul you are, in truth, a soul.
And to my soul in truth a soul

By my submission—though union with you is hard to attain—
With my humility, to attain your love is precious
and my brokenness—though your gaze is sound—
And in my brokenness, your gaze gives life

take pity on me for burning pangs and passion:
Have mercy on me in my fervent passion
I am dead from it, and you are the Messiah.
I am dying of it, and you are my Savior

I have concealed love with all my might; and if
I have concealed my love with great effort and if
passion continues to beset me, I shall confess it.
My love spills forth I shall confess it
ياO غَزالاًa gazelle لَهُfor him الحشاشَةُlife's last remnant مَرعىa pasture

O gazelle whose pasture is my life's last spark,
Oh delicate gazelle who grazes brazenly
not lavender at al-Raqmatayn, nor wormwood.
With no fear of the archers or hunters

You are what I seek in al-Ghuwayr and Najd,
You are my goal, sought from plains and highlands
when I go out inquiring, morning and evening.
As I come questioning and wander far
