بَكَيتُI wept أَسىًin sorrow وَحَقَّand was rightly due عَلىfor التَصابيyouthful frolic
وَأَيّامُand the days of الشَبابِyouth بُكاءُthe weeping of عَينيmy eye
I wept in sorrow; youthful frolic rightly deserved,
I wept in sorrow, as is fitting, over the loss of youth,
along with the days of youth, the tears of my eye.
For the days of youth call for tears from my eyes.
زَمانُa time of خَلاعَةٍrevelry أَصبَحَتI have become مِنهُfrom it
وَمِنand from أَوقاتِهِits moments صَفرُempty اليَدَينِboth hands
A time of revelry, from which I have emerged,
An age of no loyalty has dawned,
and from its moments, empty-handed.
And from its times come empty hands.
فَمُذfor since خَطَّtraced lines المَشيبُgray hair عَدِمتُI lost صَحبيmy companions
لَقَدindeed كانَwas المَشيبُgray hair غَرابَa raven of بَينِparting
For since gray hair traced its lines, I have lost my companions;
Since the hair turned white, I've lost my friends.
indeed, gray hair was a raven of parting.
Gray hair was a raven that came between us.
سَقىmay water عَهدَthe days of الصِباyouth غادٍa morning raincloud مُلِثٌّlingering
وَلاand may it not حَيّاgreet بَياضَthe whiteness of العارِضَينِthe two bearded cheeks
May a lingering morning raincloud water the days of youth,
He watered the pact of youth, gone putrid,
and may it never greet the white hair on either cheek.
No longer greeting the whiteness of my temples.
