You deserve aid in the distress of one lost,
Who is led into passion without a rein?
Led to passion with no restraint,

فَراحَ وَقَلبُهُ بَينَ الخِيامِ
He approached the tents at Zarūd,
Who lingered by the tents on soft carpets,
Then departed, his heart remaining among the tents.
Then left with his heart amid the tents.

ʿArīb of the clan, how can you permit my killing?
O noble Arab, why allow my murder?
Are the Arabs not known for honoring pledges?
Are not the Arabs known for mercy?

My greeting to Suʿdā in Kāẓima.
To my beloved a greeting of peace.

A guileless fawn has taken possession of my heart,
He has taken my heart, a tender fawn,
Tender in his coquetry, slender of stature.
Gentle of bosom, slender of frame.
أَراقَhe spilled دَميmy blood وَكانَand was دَميmy blood حَراماًinviolable

He spilled my blood, though my blood was inviolable;
He shed my blood, and my blood was sacrosanct,
Oh, the wonder of making the forbidden lawful!
Alas, how fine to shed the sacrosanct!
لِطَيفِكُمfor your apparition المُحَجَّبُthe veiled فيin فُؤاديmy heart

Your veiled apparition has, within my heart,
The phantom of you harbored in my heart
Targets for its sidelong glances and arrows.
Is armed with glances and arrows.
فَيَومٌso a day مَنof جَفاكَyour estrangement كاأِفِlike a thousand (apparent typo) شَهرٍmonths

وَشَهرٌ لَو عَلِمتَ كَألفِ عامِ
So one day of your estrangement is like a thousand months,
A day with you estranged is like a month,
And one month, if you knew, like a thousand years.
A month, did you but know, like a thousand years.

God's peace, as long as lightning flashes,
God's peace be upon one no peace can touch,
Upon the one who will not offer a greeting.
When lightning flashes on the undeserving!
