لَوif أَنكرَتdenied لَحَظاتُthe glances of طَرفِكَyour eye مَصرَعيmy death
شَهِدَتbore witness بِفَتكَتِهاto their deadly blow حَواشيthe edges of البرقعthe veil
If the glances of your eye denied my death,
The edges of the veil would testify to their deadly blow.
طلّwent unavenged الدَمthe blood المِهراقspilled يَومَthe day of سُوَيقَةٍSuwayqa
ماwhat lies بَينَbetween وَقفَةِthe stance of مودِعٍone bidding farewell وَمُوَدّعِand one being bid farewell
The blood spilled on the day at Suwayqa went unavenged,
Between the stance of one bidding farewell and one being bid farewell.
ياO سائِقَdriver of الأَظعانِthe litter-bearing camels لاdo not تَلويturn aside بِهاwith them
عَنaway from بانِbān trees كُثبانِthe dunes of اللَوىal-Liwā وَالأَجرَعِand al-Ajraʿ
O driver of the litter-bearing camels, do not turn them
Away from the bān trees on the dunes of al-Liwā and al-Ajraʿ.
مِلturn aside بِالعِطاشِwith the thirsty ones الحَائِماتِthose circling for water فَماfor there is no لَهاfor them
فيat مَورِدٍa watering place غَيرِother than الحِمىthe protected pasture مِنany مَشرَعِaccess to water
Turn aside with the thirsty, circling camels, for they have no
Access to water at any watering place outside the protected pasture.
وَإِذاand if جَفاجَفنُthe eyelid is unkind السَحابِthe cloud فَرِدthen go to water بِهاwith them
ماwhat سالَflowed فيin أَعقابِهاtheir wake مِنfrom مَدمَعيmy tear duct
And if the cloud's eyelid is unkind, lead them to drink
What flowed in their wake from my weeping eye.
أَهديI send السَلامgreetings وَلَيسَyet not كُلّevery تَحِيَّةٍgreeting
لِلصَبِّfor the lovesick lover فيin إِهدائِهاsending it مِنany مَقنَعِsatisfaction
I send greetings, yet not every greeting
Gives the lovesick lover satisfaction when sent.
فَإِذاso when الخَيالُthe phantom أَطافَcircled حَوليaround me لَمdid not يَجِدfind
إلاخيالاexcept a phantom مِثلَهُlike itself فيin مَوضِعيmy place
So when the phantom circles around me, it finds nothing
But a phantom like itself in my place.
فَالآنَso now خُنتِyou betrayed العَهدَthe pledge ياO ذاتَpossessor of اللَمىthe lips' dark hue
وَصَرَمتِand you severed حَبلَthe bond of مواصِلٍone maintaining the bond لَمdid not يَقطَعِsever
So now you have betrayed the pledge, O dusky-lipped one,
And severed the bond of a steadfast lover who never severed it.
وَظَنَنتِand you thought أَنَّthat الوُدَّaffection فيماin what lies بَينَناbetween us
باقٍenduring وَحُسنَand faithful keeping of العَهدِthe pledge غَيرَnot مُضَيَّعِneglected
And you thought that the affection between us
Still endured, and loyalty to the pledge was not neglected.

وَمَواقِفand the halts قَضَّيتُهاI spent them فيin لَعلَعِLaʿlaʿ
Will our life at Liwā al-Ujayriʿ return,
And the halts I made in Laʿlaʿ?

وَلَئِنand if indeed دَنَتdraws near دارٌa dwelling بناياwith us, O مُنيَتيmy heart's desire

And if a dwelling brings us near, O my heart's desire,
An ember within my ribs will cool with you near.
