دم في هوى هذا الرشا
Blood in the passion of this sprinkling,
عيناك في قتل الخلائق أسرفا
Your eyes in killing creatures went too far,
وقطعة حاكها أديب

وقد حلت بتونس أبغي من
I came to Tunisia seeking from her
إني لأعجب من سؤال الناس عن

يا مبدلي بالهجر من وصله

O Ahmed son of Summiya, you who
ومهفهف يكتأس في الحمام ذي
Delicate one sips in the bathroom
وظبي يناولنا منشفه
A gazelle offers us a towel
رأيت آدم في نومي فقلت له
I saw Adam in my dream, so I said to him
لاح من الغربي ظبي له
A gazelle appeared from the west
قال الوشاة ألم تعل بسلوة
The slanderers said, "Didn't you know about Soluwa's affair?"
رب شواش مشوش
Many a confused chatterer
عجبت لظبي فاتر اللحظ فاتن
I wondered at the indifference of the alluring gazelle
ورب لويلة عانقت فيها

لله ظبي بقلبي

في إذ جن ليلي

قد قلت عند وضوئه في غسله

كحل بعينك أم ضرب من الكحل

لقد سدى على يده حريرا

قل للحسود وذي الجهل الذين غدوا
Tell those who envy and the ignorant ones who have become
لأهل زماننا فخر ببخل
Our people take pride in stinginess
لأهل زماننا بالبخل فخر كما
Our contemporaries take pride in meanness
أدمى الكنائس إن تكن عبثت بكم
I bloodied the churches if you were toyed with
تلاقي من العمال أهل صفاقس
Brothers from Sfax, workers I met
وذي ازورار ابت عيناه مرتحلا
With eyes of azure this wanderer came
قالوا لشعرك طورا
Softly flows my verse
حاشية حمراء في كفه
A red margin in his palm
وقوم تصدوا لنظم القريض
A people set out to compose poetry
قل للذي متجرنا عنده
Tell the one our trade is with him
يا بليغا أتى قريضك يهمي
O eloquent one, your poem has come to me
مطلعي أئقل في أعينهم
My heart heavier in their eyes
رأيت عمامة الزقموط مهما
I saw the dove's turban wherever
صفاقس لا ترى فيها وجيها
Safaqis, you see in it no eminent men,
لموسى لحظه في الناس جرح
Moses has a moment that wounds people,
أفيض على سميا الشعر حتى
Poetry flows from me until
لئن ظهرت بالجسم منك طوالع
Though your rising radiance shines from this mortal frame
قبلتها في ثغرها
I kissed her mouth,
ولم أر شعرا أدق ولا

Slender in waist with a lithe torso
إذا عدت الأخيار كان أسرهم
If the virtuous are considered, their secret is
يجاذبني شوق الديار وغربتي
Yearning for home and exile contend within me,

عليل هوى ما أن له من معالج

Oh night that passed yesterday
يا مانعي وصال من أحببته
O you who prevent me from joining my beloved
قلت ومزن السما ينهل من سحب
I said, and the rain of the sky flows down from clouds,
أرق للخصر مهما يشك من كفل
I remain awake though my waist complains of sleeplessness,
من حوى الإصطبار يحمد مآله
Whoever endures patiently will praise his outcome
مالي عن مورد الهوى صدر
My heart has no interest in the source of passion,
يا قامة مثل غصن البان منعطفا
O figure like a bending branch of ebony
علقت به معسول ثغر مقرطق
I hung from his sweet lips a polished ring
أسمعت ما قد قال لي ريم الفلا
I heard what the graceful sand-dune said to me,
بسفك دم الصب المتيم همه
With the shedding of the blood of the enamored youth his care,
ألا قل لأحمد لا ينصرف
Tell Ahmad not to leave,
ألا كل علم إن أردت عزيزه
Behold, all knowledge, if you wish, my dear,
لله من ردف ترى
His waist you see I cling to
لهفي لفاتر لحظه الفتاك
My longing for the fatal moment of his languorous glance,
ناديته والدمع حين تجرحت
I called to him as tears streamed when I was wounded,
أهيم إذا ما مر بي في طريقه
Whenever he passes me by on his way
مليح ثوى بالقلب فهو مرادي
Beautiful he is to my heart for he's my desire
أعظم بمدرسة للعلم قد وصفت
A sublime school of knowledge I have described
كم جائر عني غدا عادلا
How many an unjust one has become just
دمع العيون همي كفيض بحور
My tears are like floods of seas
ما بقبق الكوز إلا من تألمه
The jug makes noise only when pained,
قد عجبت لأمير
I am amazed by a prince
إذا يا ابن عاشور تحرم خلتي
If, O Ibn Ashur, you deny me my retreat,
جوابك في لفظ تكرر نصفه
Your answer in a word that repeats its half
غدا جسمي بحبك كالخيال
Tomorrow my body is like a mirage in your love
لله قوم رفعت ذكرهم
For a people I exalted their mention
بدا في سراويل صفر وفي
He appeared in yellow pants and
يقولون لي دار قوس عذاره
They say, "Here is the bow of Virgin's house."
تشهدت من شوقي إلى طيب ريقه
I became infatuated with longing for his sweet saliva,
أغراه واش بالصدود وبالجفا
He tempted me with aloofness and disdain
وغادة مال قلبي نحوها وصبا
My heart inclined towards Ghada as she grew up
يقولون تونس مصر عجيب
They say Tunisia is wondrous Egypt
ألا رب مولود أتاك مبارك

على أني بليت بكل بلوى

حوادث الأيام تلقي على
The days' events cast upon
يا أبا عبد الله حتام اسعى
O Abu Abd Allah Hattam I hasten
يا من غدا طالبا مني الإجازة في
O you who have come seeking my authorization in
تهنا أبا عبد الإله بمنصب
Congratulations Abu Abdillah on your appointment
يا زمان السعد أقبل
O time of happiness, come
لقد زعموا جهلا سمية شاعرا
They ignorantly claimed the poet was poisonous
عجبت لمن ألقى بتونس رحله
I'm amazed by those who settle in Tunis
خالف الصبح من سناه جبين
His morning is unlike dawn in its radiance
لما علا البازي السفينة للنوى
When the sailor climbed the ship with purpose
لسعد بقلبي من الشوق ما
With longing in my heart for Saad is what
بشرى لمملكة الخضرا بواليها
Glad tidings to the green kingdom and its governor
لا تعجبوا إن لم يلح في الورى
Do not be surprised if my merit is not apparent in this world,
بكار يا صاحب المعالي
Sadness, O master of nobility
يا مهدي الموز تبقى
O guide of bananas, you remain
ونارنجة في حلق بلورة بدت
Like an orange in crystal's sparkling throat -
لا أعذر الطيف إذا ما أتى
I do not blame the specter when he comes
من رام يحكي أبا العباس في الأدب
He who seeks to describe Al-Abbas in literature
وسلات كم غر بمن أمته
I asked many who betrayed their nation,
ظبي تنعم في الفؤاد ومهجتي
A gazelle enjoying in my heart and my innermost being
وزجاجة في ضمنها نارنجة
A glass bottle with an orange inside,
رأيت مؤذنا للبدر يحكي
I saw a muezzin for the moon relate
وظبي قل نومي في هواه
My gazelle deprived me of sleep with her love
يا فريد الحسن يا من
Oh Fareed al-Hassan, you who
سهرت على لثم الشقيقين بخده
I stayed up all night kissing her rosy cheeks,
فلله من بغلة قد غدت
For Allah, what a she-camel that has become,
مولاي يهنك هذا الفتح مبتكرا
My Master, may this new conquest bring you joy,
لم أنس إذ أذكرني باللوى
When you remind me of those in anguish,
كاذ الذي أمسيت عبدا له
He who I have become enslaved to at night
خليلي إذا ما جئت تونس التي
My friend, if you come to Tunis, whose
أمولاي عذرا من ضني عنك عاقني
My love, forgive me for neglecting you.
يا سائلي عن حال سعد واللباش
O you who ask of Saad and Labba's state,
طائر قلبي من ظبا مقلمة
My friend, a bird of my heart with clipped wings
أقول لدهر قد توالت خطوبه
I say to time that brought misfortunes successive
سيف الولاية في يمينك قائم
The sword of authority is in your right hand, standing
يلومني العذال في وصل من
The blame of the tormentor in an encounter,
وغرير باهي المحيا أسيل
With radiant, beaming cheeks, flowing free
الان يا غصن النقا
Now, O branch of purity
أنحل جسمي الحب حتى غدا
Love has dissolved my body until it became
أيزورني ليلا وأنشد في الدجى
He visits me at night and sings in the darkness
سميا بوصف الشعر يثبت نفسه
Poetry in description proves itself
إن يصطحب في الورى ذياب
If jackals walk this earth,
ولما لئيم القوم قد صار سيدا
When the vile among the people became a master
وحمام دخلناه لأمر
We entered a bathroom for some matter,
لقد رضي المحبوب بعد صدوده
The beloved relented after his aloofness
سرقتم من عيون الظبي سحرا
You stole magic from the gazelle's eyes
وأغيد في يده
In his hand he held
يا ولي الأمر آتاك العلىلا
O ruler, you have been granted a high station
لا غرو أن قل رزقي
No wonder my sustenance is meager,
لا تطلب الإنصاف من امرىء
Do not seek fairness from one
تقاصرت ليلة بها قد
The night was brief when I was with my radiant sun
لجفني بشرح الحب درس يقرر
My eyelids were taught the lessons of love
يا من له المشتكى ياراحم المهج
O You to whom all complain, O Merciful to aggrieved souls,
ختان بالمسرة دام عزه
A circumcision in joy remains his might
يا من دواعي الحب في ألحاظه
O you whose looks of love, however much they sing
صفاقس كانت من الميل عن
Sfax was astray
ألا جردوا للجامع الأعظم الهنا
Let us hasten to the Great Mosque
لقد لاح في أفق المعارف كوكب
A star has appeared on the horizon of knowledge
ألا هل أرى ختما لمختصر الجسم
Alas! Do I see an end to this frail body
لئن غدا في كف كل العدا
Though tomorrow the whole tribe rush upon me,
فمهما أراد الشفاء امرو
No matter how much a sick man desires healing,
ألا أيها الحبر الهمام الذي غدا
O eminent poet who rose over
قلت له اكشف نقاب الجفا
I said to him, "Unveil the mask of estrangement
كتاب جامع من كل فن
A comprehensive book of every art
وما زلت أبغي بالشجاعة وصله
I have always yearned for courage to unite us
وظبي لإتمام المواعيد أفاك
My gazelle, to keep appointments, how you elude me,
له في الحشا مثواه يمسك ذاته
In the wilderness lies his abode, his being he withholds
وبدا من الحمام وهو كأحمر الياقوت
He appeared from the bath as red as pomegranate blossoms
يا ذا الذي جمع الفؤاد غرامه
O you who gathered his heart's passion
وناحل الخضر لا زالت تحاربني
The green swords still fight me,
قولوا لحسادي في وصل من
Tell my enviers in a connection from
يا ويح أهل صفاقس عزلوا
O woe to the people of Sfax who abandoned
حتام يا دهر قل لي
My fate, come tell me
قلت يوما لأبخر لا تحدث
One day I told the incense, “Do not speak,
قد قال للشرفي جامعنا اتئد
Our preacher said to Al-Sharifi: Restrain yourself,
سمية مقتله تشعر
Her death poem stirs feelings -
كانت صفاقس بعد تونس موحشا
After Tunis, Sfax seemed desolate to me
تأس إذا أبصرت صاحب ثروة
When you see a wealthy man, aspire to be like him,
ولئن تقل إن الغراب مسود
Though you say the raven is blackened,
ولما أن وفت العهد سلمى
And when the tryst was kept by Salma
لله يوقال قديم غدا
It is said that God of old
ولما بدا للعين ميزان شعركم
When the scale of your poetry appeared to my eyes
لئن غيبوا في الترب عادل قده
Though they buried the just leader in the earth
يذكرني سنا برق الغوير
Her lightning flash reminds me of al-Ghuwair's
ختن لأنجال علي
A circumcision for Ali's sons
لا تحسبوا عاشور تاب عن الخنا
Do not think that Ashura has repented from sin,
لحسونة الجام حانوت حانوت بها
Her mouth is a shop, a shop with beauty in it
طرفي أقر بما لساني يجحد
My eyes confess what my tongue denies
لبابك تزجي بالمديح الركائب
Your eloquence pours forth praise in torrents
سرى ووميض البرق يحدو به مسرعا
He went in haste as lightning flashed
ونارنجة في حلق بلورة صفت
Like an orange in a crystal bowl it sat
وأهوى الذي يعلم نفسه
And the one who teaches himself
أقول وقد أشاعوا عنه صدي
I say, though they spread far and wide, tales of woe about him whose loss I mourn,
تبدي على ساقه كاشفا
Revealing himself upon his leg, exposing
ولله خصر تجاوز أن
For God has a waist beyond imagining—
يا من رقى بكماله درج العلى
O you who has attained the highest rank of perfection,
أضاف المؤدب أصحابه
The teacher took his friends
أرى نفة الأنف لو لم تكن
I see the breath of the nose as though it were not
ولله حمام كأن جحيمنا
By Allah, it is a bathroom as if it were our hell,
لله ظبي سبا عقلي بلامين
My mind was led astray by a gazelle in the desert,
حللت سوسة لاحل الرخاء بها
I untied my sandal though comfort comes not from it,
نجم السعادة في علاك تصعدا
The star of fortune rises in your heights,
وافي وفي طرفه نوع من الكسل
He is elegant, though with a touch of laziness,
أسنى البوارق لاح أم بدر بدا
The ships gleamed, was it the full moon rising?
خداه ورد وعارضاه
Her cheek is a rose and her cheekbone a branch,
وكل على القلب مستنكر
Everything about him is repulsive
وساق سقاني شبه دمعة آماقي
He gave me a cup like a tear drop
رمضان حجة أهل تونس في الغنا
Ramadan is the authority of the people of Tunis in singing
يا من تملك في هواه بحسنه
O you who with your beauty reigns supreme,
ومن الذي يصغي للحنك سمعه
Who lends their ear to your melody
رأيت الناس كلهم عدوا
I saw all people as enemies to me
رشأ في هواه أمسى بخيلا
The one who was once generous with his love
زارني والليل داج
He visited me while night was dark
بتونس ظبي كالغزالة وجهه
In Tunisia a deer-like gazelle is his face
يا ذا الذي حجبت سناه طوالع
O you whose splendor the dawns have veiled
لبني الترك شمت سيقان در
The legs of my beloved are like stalks of pearls
حتام باب رضاك عني مغلق
The door to your acceptance is closed to me
رأيت بها ما يرفع الغم والأسى
I saw in it what lifts gloom and sorrow
مدحتكم مدحا لو مدحت بمثله
I praised you with praise, if I had praised
سألت منه الوصل في خلوه
I asked for union in his seclusion
بشراي نلت من السرور منائي
My heart rejoiced with glad tidings
ألا رب ليل بت فيه مشاهدا
O Lord, a night in which I stay up watching
قد قلت جسمي فني صلني فقال إلى
I said my body is weak, so join me
يا ايها العلم الهمام ومن له
O you the high-aspiring science, and he who
خليلي جار الدهر عني وأحمد
My friend, time has distanced me, yet I praise
وأغن بحلظه شك قلبي
His glance ignited doubt within my heart
شهد السقام بأنني لك عاشق
Illness testified that for you I am a lover
يا من له في ذرى العلياء تمكين
O you who has power over the high heavens
ألا قل لقوم حللوا شتم عرضنا
Tell those who made permissible the defamation of our honor:
إذا ما غدا في زيه متنكرا
When he comes in disguise at dawn
أرى العادل الزقموط يكرم ضيفه
I see the generous man honoring his guest
ألا رب قرطاس يروقك حسنه
Oh how a sheet of paper can delight you with its beauty
قلبي يشوق إلى العذيب وبارق

كتائب صبري مزقت بعيونه
His patient battalions were torn by her eyes,
يانسيم الصبا تحمل سلامي
O breeze of the dawn, carry my greetings
أهواه غصنا أصله في الحشا
I loved a branch, its roots in the wilderness
يا أيها الملك الهمام ومن غزا
O noble king who fought bravely
هويت مطرزا كالبدر حسنا
I fell in love with one as beautiful as the full moon
سل الليل عن سهدي به ودياجيه
Ask the night about my sleeplessness and insomnia
نسخت مقلتاه عقلي ابتداء

وعد الحبيب بأن يزور فلم يزر

ألا يا مالكا بجزيل شكره

وأغيد في يده سبحة
In his hand he holds a rosary
حديث عنقاء صب أدرك الأملا
The discourse of a graceful doe who attained hope
هل من بشير إلى لقياك بالفرح
Is there any herald to gladly announce our meeting,
في دولت الحسن غدت مقلته
In the state of Al-Hassan, his eyes became
يقولون الغراب إذا تبدى
They say when the raven whitens
وساحلي أغيد ردفه
My coastline sings its melody
يا سالكا منهج أهل التقى
O you who walk the path of the pious
حسن هذا السقف يحكي في البها
لم أر أوجاع الكلى فعلها
قد كان كيسي عامرا
يا غربتي ثوب الهوان كسوتني
لأهل زماننا بالبخل فخر

قل للعواذل إن عابوا محاسنه

أوردتني الأهوال نظرة عين
ومليح أطال عمر سهادي
قد صح أن العقربي لعقرب
دع الشعراء في مدح وذم
صفعت عنقا له مديدا
كلانا في القيادة لا يبالي
ما حك جلدك مثل ظفرك
ونفة أخذتها
ته يا صفاقس وافتخر طول المدى
لهفي على أنس بتونس مر بي
يا من إذا في كل فن إمام
عمامة الزقموط فيها له
وباخل يجمع الدينار قلت له
ألا قل لمن أضحى يشيع بجهله
مديح رسول الله أول واجب
ألا أيها الملك الأعز مكانه
سرورا جنينا وسرا عجيبا
تبسم وجه الأرض وافتر عن ثغر
زارتك بعد تمنع وجفاء
ألا أيها الحبر الذي بحر علمه
يا سيدا ساد الأنام بفضله
أيا قمرا بالطرف يخفى ويظهر
يا ذا الذي فعله في الناس محمود
يا من لرتبته الثوابت في العلى
خذ من فنون العلم كل عويص
ما للمدامع كل حين تذرف
وبدر إذا ما بدا في الدجى
وقالوا لماذا لم يقف لك مرة
يا من له قامة تهتز من هيف
رشأ عليه من الجمال سلاح
أسمعت ما قد قال لي بدر السما
حبيبي أرسل أوراقه
أسمعت ما قد قال لي غصن النقا
لا زلت أخضع للزمان ودأبه
لعمرك ما ذنبي سوى أن حبه
وقالوا لماذا متى ما رأيت
ألا دلني في الوصل كيف سبيله
وبديع الحسن فرد
ما مر بي في ثوبه البالي
لكل من بني الأتراك ردف
يا من فؤادي يصلي
لما رأيت دخان الهجر منه بدا
وأغيد فيه عذر مصطبر
وليل طويل من مغيبك سيدي
قضى قده جورا بتمليك مهجتي
وأكحل العينين أبصرته
أسمعت ما قد قال لي الدر الذي
أرى الشرفين ليس لهم عهود
إن يخف ذكري حسودي
ولقد بذلت الشعر حتى أنني
تأمل لهذا الباب وانظر لصنعه
عقودي تشتكي طول العقود
يقول إذا كلت مطيي ولا
ولله ديوان شعر غدا
يا مليكا أثنت عليه الأيادي
