1. I repeat the words of my beloved in my hearing,
And I relate the tales of passion to my tears.

2. And I do not narrate the news of youth save for
The sequence of those tears sent forth from the branches.

3. And tomorrow my body will be clad in the garment of illness,
Still pausing for his union, though it undress me.

4. So my tears' tales and my illness are truthful,
And is there any fabrication in the correct narratives?

5. Neither does my illness agree with separation's cure,
Nor does my soul in love verify repeal.

6. I see my malady's origin a night whose branch
Is dragged by a morn in which that dragging ends in raising.

7. You see behind the sweet union's drink a serpent that
Makes circles and kills the lover with the pain of its sting.

8. Does a gazelle whose pasture is minds, whose yard
Is an open space, and that turns to a still quarter, sing?

9. My patience was rent when it brought together his love,
And separation did not return it to collecting.

10. It permits my blood unjustly and prohibits his union.
So how confused am I between permitting and preventing!

11. And it is the pillar of my patience. Whenever it weakens or slants,
Alas for my agony if what slanted strengthened collapse!

12. It intended separation, and made his union its string.
And the string of the praying one in his heart without doubling.

13. I armored myself in the war of passion to repel him
With a patience in which I felt secure from splitting.

14. So he stripped a sword from glances' sheaths,
And tore what protections I had made of that armor.

15. He wants to pull him from my conscience,
And without him, to pull life itself is without pulling.

16. My eyes are clear, and I see the knocker of the beloved
At her door - both his hands made lame from knocking.

17. My night lengthened from his repulsion lengthening.
Woe to a night whose length tried my tether!

18. And when the night discarded in its remaining some clothes,
I knew the dawn was in the state of stripping.

19. And I have not forgotten a day when I said "Unite me tonight,"
And he said "Is union not prohibited in sacred law?"

20. So I said to him "From whom did you report?" And he said "From
An imam the lovesick clung to, high of branch."

21. An imam pure, who taught with effective supplication,
So all the people drank from that uddershoot.

22. His excellence encompassed the horizon's expanses
As what benefited people encompassed it.

23. The banners of sublime are bound for him in glory
And his noble deeds surpassed the seven planets.

24. The hidden, knotty problems almost speak to him openly by his lesson
And attain hearing, elucidated by counseling's dawn.

25. The age's neck was adorned by him, so that his hands
Are adorning the past era with benefit.

26. He brought forth upon the precincts of Tunis a wellspring.
So I named the green land by that fountain.

27. He preceded in gathering the sciences, so he delayed
All others from preceding in the rank of gathering.

28. Hitting the mark of opinion in every puzzling case,
Clarified is counseling's dawn from deception's gloom.

29. Expression's scope is too narrow to limit his glory,
And what contains what he comprises of glory is beyond capacity.

30. He wore Godwariness in every situation
And wore asceticism toward base, fleeting world and contentment.

31. Hidden, his merit's fame crept among the people,
And a harbinger by which his generosity's nature is specified.

32. If admonitions from him are planted in hearing,
Fruits of righteousness are harvested from that cultivation.

33. O scholar whose sublime's turban in glory
Is from his slipper's place in position of licking!

34. You concluded al-Bukhari's narratives so all of humankind
Inclines toward that craftsmanship.

35. Narratives of one whose assembly the creation's hearing
Is like the speech of inanimate things and the groan of the tree trunk.

36. May God's prayers be upon him as long as the breeze blew
And the greenfinch twittered one day on a branch.

37. And the verse's Lord asks for your fine supplication,
Hopefully by your supplication to spread benefit universally.

38. So the seals in the meadow of your lesson continue flowering,
And this seal is at the peak of sublime.
