بادر بعيشك فالنعيم مخيم
Seize your life, for bliss camps
إِذا ما مضى للمرء يوم من البشر
When a day passes for a man without good tidings
ما الروض نديان الثرى متعطرا
Neither meadows are fragrant with flowers
سقى الله أياما بغوطة جلق
God watered days with abundant rain
عشقتني يا فاتني بالغنا
You made me fall in love with you through singing,
كأنما شجرات الدوح في خلع
As if the doum-palm trees in the folds
سلاما كأنفاس الحبيب الملازم
Greetings like a lover's lingering breath,
لو رحت أبكي بكت لأجلي القلوب القسي
If I went to weep, hard hearts would weep for me,
خير ما مقدم أفاض النوالا
The best of what pours forth abundance
مذ أتيت الورود أبصرت فيها
Roses when I came to view
ما اسم من الأزهار تركيبه
What name of flowers is its structure
ومرنة في الواديين بسحرة
With a slender and graceful figure in the valleys
وأهيف مغنوج اللواحظ مترف
With delicate wrists and observant glances
قادني للربى مروح العنان
The scent of dew in the basil led me astray
وبستانا غرست به بقاعا
And a garden I have planted, with fields
قد خط ياقوت خد
Yaqut traced the cheek
وذي ترف رخيم الدل يرنو
With a gentle breeze caressing the branches
يا سائلا عن نجاح معنى
O one asking about the meaning of success
أرى زهر القرنفل قد جليت
I see the carnation's blossom bared
تكاد إذا ما شدت فوقه
When sorrow descends upon a frail soul
كم ضمت الترباء خلقا قبلنا
How many virtues Earth embraced of old
قم سيدي شرف بلا مهلة
Arise, my lord, show honor without delay
كأن رقوم الضرب طير حوائم
Like the lines of calligraphy are hovering birds
كم حبانا زهر القرنفل خدا
Roses have graced us with their scent
يا منتهى النفس سر لنا عجلا
O my soul's desire, come quickly
تنبهت في الروابي نسمة الفلق
The breeze of dawn stirred in the meadows,
لم أنس لما أن شخصت إلى الربى
I have not forgotten when I headed towards the wilderness
ملكت زمام الحسن والحسن لا يخفى
You have taken hold of beauty's reins, your charm cannot be hidden
يا رضي الخلال يا من تحلى
O you who is pleased with the finest qualities,
حبانا لذيذ العيش آذار واغتدت
The sweet life's spring has brought us joy
أفرائد برزت من الأصداف
Are those pearls that emerged from oyster shells
لك الطائر الميمون فاسرج به طرفا
For you is the auspicious bird, so saddle it and depart
يا أنعم الله المساء وغبذا
O the most beautiful evening God has granted and adorned
عطفا على من براه السقم من فكر
With kindness to one whom sickness of thought has struck
جاء الحبيب بطيبه
The beloved came with his fragrance
أبدر تم مذ تبدا طالعا
I recall the days when love held the reins
وزهر كأمثال الشنوف لطافة
A flower soft as flakes of lamb's ear
لا تعبأن بذي مكر تحاذره
Pay no heed to the schemer you fear
إني لمشتاق لربوة جلق
I yearn for the hill of Jilaaq
قد لوى جيده حياء وحيا
He bashfully bent his neck in greeting
وللثريا ركود فوق أرحلنا

اكتب محاسن ما ترى

سقت مستهلات الدموع السوارب

خاطبت منك طبيبا
I sought a healer in you,
وبط من الوادي حللنا مقيلة
In the valley's belly we pitched our tents
ونديم طارحته بعض ما بي
A friend of mine revealed to me some of what was inside me
يا حسن إبريق أتاك معصفرا
O beauty of a golden jug, ornamented
ومثلك من كان الوسيط فؤاده

وعصفورة للتوت تشدو موقعا
A berry bird sings a tune
يحن الحبيب إلى رؤيتي
My beloved yearns to see me
شوق كوري الزند يقدح في الحشا
Longing is like sparks from flint, igniting tender wood
وأقلنا لدى مدب ظلال
And we paused by the roaming of shade's shadows
الروض طلق والنسيم مهينم
The meadow is bare and the breeze gentle,
تألق برق من غريب اللوى جنحا
A flash of lightning with strange colors spread its wings.
يا ابن أبي الخير ويا من غدت
O son of the virtuous father, and O you whose
وروضة اينعت بالزهر وابتسمت
A garden bloomed with flowers and smiled
لعينيك في الأحشاء ما نفث السحر
Your eyes in my heart cast a spell like magic,
رب ساق مقرطق من بني الفرس
A smooth-legged courser from the Persian stock,
أرن في عذبات الأيك مرنان
The birds sing melodiously in the thickets
أمن الوداد تزاور بتكلف

لله من فوارة قد أرسلت
God has sent forth a gushing fountain
سقت مستهلات الحيا المتضاعف
The spent clouds of life poured down

وردت إلى بيت الأريب البارع
A maiden came to the adept poet's abode
ظفر ترى ما أراه أم ناب
Is this vision I see before me real or a mirage
برح الخفاء فما ذكاء إياس
Gone is subtlety, for what cleverness remains
أتت أسماء ساحبة رداها
Asma came, drawing her cloak
وظبي غرير أودع الله ثغره
A gazelle with charming eyes, Allah has granted it
خطرنا بحكم اللهو للسفح خطرة
We roamed by whim to the meadow's slope, a perilous roam,
غيري يلذ له الهوى بهوان
While others find pleasure in love's folly,
سقى الله عهد الصالحية والصرح
God watered the covenant of legitimacy and the palace
وافى الربيع بترنام الفواخيت
Spring has come with the fanfare of festivities
غضارة عيش ما أعانيه أم ضنك
The bitterness of a life I suffer, or its straitness
صيبت خمائلنا بأيمن وافد
Our beauty's misfortune with the auspicious newcomer
ما للرياض تنمنمت أدواحها
Why does the garden flutter its leaves
لا زلت مسعود الصباح
You remain blessed each morn
لو أن بيضة زاغ راح يحضنها
If a toad's egg was nurtured
لما بدا بردى تجود فروعه
When its branches began to be generous with their coldness
مذ رأت عيني وقد رمدت
Since my eyes saw, though now they're dimmed,
ولاعب بالنرد أبصرته
I saw a young man playing with dice
مر بنا ظبي حريري
A gazelle passed by us, silk-soft,
يا رخيم الدلال يا أتلع الجي
O breeze of tenderness, O most gentle of winds
لما دنت ساعة التوديع قلت له
When the hour of parting drew near, I said to him
إلحاق تالد ما سعيت به
What you sought to accomplish with fine words
وجني من القرنفل يبدي
A rosebud smiles at you, emanating
وأسمع ترنام محدودب
And I hear the murmur of a limited stream
رب الفصاحة والحصافة
Lord of eloquence and wisdom
للمرء مالان إحسان وسيئة
A person has good deeds and misdeeds
قطبت وجهها وعبست الطر
Her face grew stern, the sky frowned dark,
حين بان الخليط وازداد وجدي
When the mixture appeared and my passion increased
إليك علامة الوجود ومن
To you is the sign of existence and he who
وبين الغصون الهيف للنهر أرقم

واضيعتي بعد ما جد النفار ضحى
My negligence increased after the departure of the envoys at dawn
لم أنسه وسنان يأسر نفسه
I did not forget him, whose glance holds souls captive
إن للفيجة الفريدة عينا
Indeed this unique beauty has eyes,
لله منك كتاب راح يوسعني
From you is a book of God that brought me relief
وأكمة تحكي المهود ترعرعت
And a skull that tells of cradles, once cradled
لله من عهد الصبابة والصبا
Since the days of my youth and early manhood
كروبجات صغار سال في لمع
Little droplets fell in a shimmer
بكرت مهينمة الصبا تغليسا
The morning of youth dawned gracefully,
أيا محتداً هزت نسائم ذكره
O troublemaker, whose mention the breezes shook
أنظر إلى خيمة وقد نصبت
Look at a tent that has been erected
يا أنعم الله المساء وغبذا
O fairest of evenings and most sublime
لقد طال سعيا للصبا بالرسائل
He has long sought the youth through messages,
ترب الخطابة والمجادة
The ashes of eloquence and debate
نفحات أنس أم شذا ألطاف
Are they breaths of intimacy or fragrant meadows?
بضاعة بئر بالمدينة قد حكى
The goods of the well in the city have told
رب أحوى أحور الجفن
Many a night my eyelids reddened and swelled,
لله ربوة جلق من روضة
For God a hill of smooth sand in a garden
يا حبذا منزل ومرتبع
Oh how delightful, this abode and its precinct
أرش لي جناح الحظ مولاي إنني
Oh Lord, sprinkle me with the wings of good fortune,
عملوا على سير البكور فكدت من
They urged me to depart at the break of dawn, but I almost
نبذ العهود مغاضبي فألم بي
He broke his pledges in anger, bringing pain upon me
وأحور أحوى ساحر الطرف أغيد
The enchanting, bewitching glance of the charmer enraptures me,
أصبح السنبل الجني لدينا
The harvest of wheat has come to us
إنتخب للندام كل حديث
Select for regret every conversation
لا بد للنفس أحيانا إذا سئمت
The soul at times, when weary and distressed,
فأبرزتها عذراء في زي غادة
She revealed herself, a maiden in the garb of a gazelle,
يا ساقي القوم قد هب النيام على
O cupbearer, the people have fallen asleep
سلام له من نشر دارين نفحة
Greetings to him who spreads a meadow's scent,
در در الصبا ودر التصابي
The gusts of youth have passed and the days of my prime are gone
وكأنما الأغصان يثنيها الصبا
As though the branches were bent by the breeze
وميثاء لا تحتلها الشمس ثرة
A refuge where the sun's beams never pierce
قم وسق المدام كوباً فكوبا
Rise and pass the cup of wine around, cup by cup,
مهينمة جاءت بأوصاف ماجد
With descriptions of Majid did she come
إذا صفت المودة بين قوم
When affection draws people together
يا نديمي بادر فأهنا السرور
My friend, hasten, for joy is here
ذكرت في قاسيون اليوم ألفتنا
In Qasioun today I recalled our friendship
يا طيب يوم للمدامة والصبا
O gentle day for the lady and youth
أيا فاضلا يبدي الصفاء تكرما
O virtuous one whose kindness shows sincerity
توغلت فيما لست مبديه جاهدا
I delved deeply into what you did not initiate, striving,
رب ظبي مقرطق مذ تبدى
The lord of a glistening hyena since it appeared
لقد بشرتنا باقتبال وجدة
You have brought us glad tidings of a renewed life,
ألاح وميض البرق عند ابتسامه
The lightning flashed with his smile,
وبحيث الطرفاء مدت ملاء
The meadows have extended their green expanse
تهدل من باناس شط إلى الفلا
He slopes down from the highlands of Banas to the plain
يا حليف الكمال بالطائر الميمون
O partner of perfection with the auspicious owl
ويا ليلة أفنيت فاحم نفسها
Oh night I have wasted, inhaling its scent
هلال لاح أم شبل تبدي
Is it a crescent moon that appeared
ولما زارني سحرا حبيب
When my beloved visited me at dawn
وكأس وندمان وساق وقينة
With a cup, a drunkard, a leg, and a lute
فما حال بين الضب والنون حائل
So there is nothing between the wolf and the friendly letter
لله من السفح ظلال الوقف
The shadows of the valley belong to Allah
أفدي صغيرا مر بي متخفرا
A little one passed by me concealing himself
أنظرهما في الظلام قد نجما
I see them shining in the dark
لا تنس لا ينسك الرحمن ليلتنا
Do not forget, the Merciful will not forget our night
لا أحب الجليس فظا غليظا
I do not love a companion who is rude and harsh,
سعدت مطالعنا بأكرم وافد
Our pleasure in reading was enhanced by the arrival
الشعر ضرب من التصوير قد كشفت

كأن الثريا وقد جمعت

يا أيها النشوان من سنة الكرى

ولما تفاوضنا الحديث عشية

فديه في الحمام من متجرد
A young man undressed in the bath
أيا ليلة باتت تساهم مقلتي
O night that kept my eyelids company
وابق واسلم لوجنة الدهر خالا
Persist and submit to the vicissitudes of fate
تنفست نسمات السحر في السحر
The breezes of dawn breathed at dawn
إِليك نفثة مصدور بعثت بها
To you I send a breath I exhaled
ولما تفاوضنا الحديث وأقبلت
When we conversed and you turned to me
خفقت نسمة الصبا في الرياض
The morning breeze fluttered in the gardens
بكرت عنادل روضنا
The bulbuls began singing in our garden
دب العذار بخده

بسفح الصالحية قد نزلنا

ألا حبذا شجراء جلق عريت

The caller has turned towards the meadows of Jalaq
غيم الرقيع فلم يكد
The clouds of autumn have scarcely
تراك المهل في حث الركاب
Your delay in spurring on the mounts,
ألا مرحبا باقتبال الربيع
Behold, welcome the coming of spring
إلى روضة الآداب ريحانة الندى
To the garden of literature, the breeze of dew,
قل وحث المدام في إبانه
Say this and urge the wine during its prime
بكرت علي نوازع الأشواق
At dawn longing overwhelmed me,
وبطن من الوادي حللنا مسيله
We traversed the valley's womb, following its streams
حتام تبدو لنا وتحتجب
You appear and hide from me
فما روضة أبدت بكل كمامة
No garden has ever blossomed from every bud,
ما كل وقت للزيارة صالح
Not every time is right for a visit,
لاتني في وضع شكل الرقم
Put me in the shape of a number
حاءتك تعنو للجناب الرفيع
You came seeking the eminent nobility
مر بنا ظبي هضيم الحشا
A graceful gazelle passed by us,
حنانيك يا ورقاء حتى م تسجعي

عهدي بأيامي على النيربين
My pledge to my days is between the two rivers
صحف الوفا مني إليك ومنك لي
The pages of loyalty from me to you and from you to me
أيا من غدا في اللغز سباق غاية
O you who tomorrow races towards the finish line
وجدي القديم حديث العهد صيره
My old mind with its newfound power made me,
برح الخفاء فما لجدك معمل
The secrecy has departed, so why delay your generosity?
ما أصبح الروض مطوياً على العبق
The meadow folded not with fragrance imbued,
يا روضة الود التي لم تزل
O garden of affection that has not ceased to be
يا عقلة حنت إليك حشا
Oh Uqula, I yearned for you, longing
وقرنفل غض المكاسر ناصع
The tender carnation with its petals gleams,
يا أسعد الله المساء وأنعما
O you whom God has blessed with a happy evening and bestowed favor,
كم حللت الحبى بشرخ الشباب
How often have I analyzed love through the aperture of youth
للفيجة الغناء عين لم تزل
The spring has an eye that will not cease
اعمل لنفسك ما استطعت
وأهيف مهضوم الحشا كاد رقصه
درنا مع المحبوب في
سلام كما افتر الأقاحي في الربى
يا فؤادا أذابه برح الوجد
سبحان من أبدى رقوم
ودوح يريك الطل في جيد غصنه
وخود ردح ريش سهم لحاظها
ومطرد الأجزاء صفر من القذى

توسمته لما تكامل حسنه
